We often hear talk about the need for “We the People” to get more involved in politics given the sad state of affairs in Washington, D.C., but we may want to consider that “We the People” are the problem.
With the 2024 presidential election beginning to look like a repeat of 2020, with an 80-year-old white male Democrat running against a 77-year-old white male Republican, USA Today asked a sampling of voters who their ideal candidates are and the results are not promising.
A 66-year-old woman from Florida pointed to radical left Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., who failed in her 2020 presidential bid.
“She has the wisdom. She has the policy expertise. She has consumer expertise, and she has the historical knowledge that I think that she could actually take this country and take it to the next level that we need to go,” the woman.
A 21-year-old master’s student at George Mason University in Virginia agreed but added that U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, D-N.Y., would also be an ideal Democratic candidate for president.
“Speaking as another woman of color, I just love to see someone like her just go into politics, especially because young women of color are very underrepresented…and I really like how she’s not afraid to like speak her voice, which I think is really important for a politician, and she’s a good role model for younger woman,” the younger woman said of the self-avowed socialist lawmaker.
Across the aisle, a 19-year-old who serves on the board of the Texas Young Republicans told USA Today that while he doesn’t have an ideal candidate, he would like to see a younger, more energetic candidate like Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin, or businessman Vivek Ramaswamy.
“With DeSantis, his record sort of speaks for itself in Florida,” the young man said. “He’s got a lot of things he’s done there with the economy and with COVID policy.”
A 51-year-old voter involved in trying to bar Donald Trump from appearing on Minnesota’s ballot in 2024 pointed to former Texas Rep. Will Hurd — the Republican conveniently opposes Trump.
“Hurd has been outspoken on the deficit issue in the long term federal debt in terms of the need to reduce spending,” the man said.
A 52-year-old Democrat — go figure — who lives in Washington, D.C., said her ideal candidate would be former Wyoming Rep. Liz Cheney (R).
“I don’t agree with her policy but again, I don’t necessarily vote on policy because to me that’s going to change with every election cycle,” the woman said. “For me, it’s about someone having a moral fiber.”
“She just has appeared to me to be a person that will at least come to the table and engage in conversations with other parties,” she added.
A 66-year-old private chauffeur who lives in California pointed to Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), calling the failed 2012 Republican presidential nominee’s views “a true win-win” for both sides.
“That’s just who the guy is. He’s open to things. He’s not like ‘it’s my way or the highway,’ you know? So I just love that about the guy,” the man said.
Here’s a quick sampling of responses to the story from X:
If you ask Republicans who their ideal candidate is and they answer Mitt Romney, Liz Cheney, or Will Hurd, you haven’t actually talked to any Republicans. https://t.co/z0S2cCYrmV

Republicans have already spoken on Liz Cheney.
And Mitt Romney has, for once, read the tea leaves.
Ready to talk with some actual republicans?
