Vermont school raises Somali flag, and all hell breaks lose

A Vermont school district triggered nationwide fury by raising the Somali flag last Friday to protest President Donald Trump’s criticism of the fraud-committing Somalis in Minnesota.

According to VTDigger, last Friday, the Winooski School District held a Somali flag-raising ceremony at its “combined elementary, middle, and high school campus.”

The ceremony quickly went viral on social media:

By Monday, all hell had broken loose.

Winooski School District superintendent Wilmer Chavarria said that the district’s phone lines began “blowing up” that morning with angry callers, some of whom reportedly used racial slurs.

“We’re coming for you!” and “You don’t know what’s coming!” were some of the things yelled by the callers.

The district promptly responded by publishing a Facebook post informing critics that the Somali flag had been raised next to a U.S. flag and Vermont flag — and that the Somali flag hadn’t been raised by itself:

First, we want to assure everyone that the United States flag remains in its proper place at the highest point, in full…

“It’s pretty scary,” Chavarria said of the fierce reaction the district’s decision triggered.

However, he intends to double down.

The reaction from the public has “given us even more of a mission to continue doing the right thing,” he said.

“Because if they are willing to attack our employees to that extent, I don’t want to find out what they’re willing to do to our most vulnerable students in the building who just happen to be of a different color, speak a different language, have a different family story,” he added.

In the meantime, the district has disabled its website because of all the backlash.

As for who Chavarria blames for this fiasco, it appears to be President Trump, who last week blasted the fraud-committing Somalis in Minnesota as “garbage.”

“It’s almost marching orders for a large part of the U.S. population to go and harass our community,” the school superintendent said.

Adam Silverman, a spokesperson for the Vermont State Police, told Newsweek that his department is investigating the whole matter.

“As part of its mission related to school safety, the Vermont Intelligence Center is tracking and monitoring voicemail messages that the Winooski School District is forwarding for review,” he said.

“As of late afternoon Monday, that figure numbered in excess of 200 messages. This appears to be part of a coordinated national campaign. None of the messages reviewed so far had presented a credible threat of violence,” he added.

As of Tuesday morning, the Somali flag was reportedly still flying.

“Chavarria said the district had police officers stationed at the school on Monday, and staff are planning to take additional safety precautions for students,” according to Newsweek. “He said the district remains committed to showing support to the Somali community.”

The school district is also facing backlash for its pro-illegal alien advocacy.

“Earlier this month, the school district announced it was working to help a second-grade student at the school who was being held in immigration detention in Texas after being stopped with his mother while traveling over the Thanksgiving holiday,” according to Seven Days magazine.

“The student’s father [said] that the family had been in the U.S. for three years and in Winooski for about two months. They were in the process of applying for asylum, said the father, who asked for anonymity,” the reporting continued.
