Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy invited a pro-choice heckler to speak on Monday while he was talking at a public event with Iowa state GOP Chairman Jeff Kaufmann, giving her the floor to air her opinions and praising the protester for doing so while lauding her right to free speech.
When Kayla Crist first started yelling, “Protect our women” and “Republicans are raping people,” interrupting Ramaswamy as he spoke, staffers rose and attempted to eject her, but the conservative stopped them as she screamed about Roe v. Wade and rape, declaring it was her body, her choice. Instead, he asked her to come up and speak her mind.
“I want to give her a chance to speak,” he said.
“If someone nonconsensually rapes me, I’m not having their child,” the heckler declared while she wiped away tears. “It’s my choice; it’s my body. I’ve already raised my kid that somebody implanted in me and doesn’t take care of. The system does nothing for the single mother. There’s no child support, and nobody goes after them. I raised my child by myself.”

“I want to say you’re doing one of the most important things… a mother raising more children in this world. Even if we have our disagreements, I want to say thank you for that. So thank you,” Ramaswamy told the distraught woman.
“And part of what it means to live in this country is we have free speech, we get to speak our minds openly, even if we all don’t agree on it,” he added. “So, let’s actually applaud her for the courage, coming into a room and asking a question even though we don’t agree on everything, OK?”
Ramaswamy has previously stated that “unborn life is life,” but he does not support a federal abortion ban.
Crist, who spoke to NBC News after the event, declined to reveal her party affiliation. She commented that she had not planned to interrupt the event in Ottumwa, which is about 125 miles from Stanwood in Iowa.

Most recent polling reportedly shows support for Ramaswamy among Republican primary voters at about 3 percent in June according to NBC News. But current polls on Twitter show him gaining ground fast at 10 percent, now in third place behind Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.)

During that same event, he discussed his “America First 2.0″ agenda.
“I think it’s going to take somebody with energy and, dare I say, a sense of youthfulness,” Ramaswamy told KTVO. “And I think that that energy is what’s going to be required. Most of all, to revive national pride in the next generation of Americans. And that’s what I’m in this to do.”
When he took the stage, Ramaswamy told the crowd he would speak the truth, “unapologetically.”
Self governance. Free speech. Merit. Rule of law. TRUTH. We’re not just running from something, we’re running *to* something. Thank you, @IowaGOP. pic.twitter.com/2SsWG4bSJX

“Part of my reasons for being in this race is the few things I want to do for this country – shut down the administrative state, declare independence from China, grow the economy…” he said at the event.
Ramaswamy spoke of severing ties with China and his willingness to use the military at the southern border, which was met with applause.
China wants the Ukraine war to last as long as possible to deplete Western military capacity before invading Taiwan. It’s working: we think we appear stronger by helping Ukraine, but we actually become weaker vis-à-vis China. @WHO13news pic.twitter.com/cPcHff1yBz

He also spoke about meritocracy and slammed affirmative action. The 37-year-old called it a “cancer on our national soul.”
KTVO asked Ramaswamy what he thought about the Supreme Court’s decision to gut affirmative action.
“It’s over in college admissions. We need to end it in the economy and in the corporate world as well. What it means for college admissions is we’re going to have meritocracy again in college admissions. But I think that we also need to start at a young age and make sure all kids have equal access to K-through-12 education, which is why school choice is essential…” he commented.
Ramaswamy will remain in Iowa to be a part of the legislature’s special session taking place on Tuesday. It is expected lawmakers will pass an abortion bill similar to the six-week fetal heartbeat law Governor Kim Reynolds signed back in 2018.
The Republican candidate won a lot of support during the Iowa event as evidenced on Twitter:

THIS is the America I remember! I can disagree with her, and still have a lot of respect for her.
And Vivek… if he can de-escalate a situation like that, so effortlessly and turn it into a positive… THAT’S the kind of guy I want negotiating for us on the world stage.
