Surveyed voters pinpointed which issue was most likely to hurt Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign and President Donald Trump was already on message.
From a desire to abolish private health insurance to her responsibility for the worsening border crisis, Harris’ record as a leftist provided a number of avenues for the GOP to keep policy at the forefront over personality heading toward Election Day.
According to a poll conducted by J.L. Partners for the Daily Mail, the standout among the potential lines of attack for 1,054 likely voters was her backing of a bail fund that saw the release of criminals who later went on to commit murder.
Of issues polled, it was the only concern to clear the halfway mark at 54% of respondents viewing her less favorable for it while 9% actually believed it made her more favorable.
“If the Trump campaign wants people to feel Harris is too liberal, or is dangerous, or is crazy, they need evidence,” J.L. Partners co-founder James Johnson asserted. “Our poll shows that there would be worse places to look than her bail fund decision while a senator. It is real, relatable, and alarming for voters of all colors and creeds.”
The finding came as a recent report pointed out that then-California Sen. Harris hadn’t just tweeted her favor for the Minnesota Freedom Fund, but had actually gone on to feature an entire post on her blog in May 2020 that stated in part, “Today, in solidarity with those protesting, I am asking for your help if you are able.”
“Will you make a contribution to the Minnesota Freedom Fund, an organization working on the ground in Minnesota to post bail for arrested protestors?” she asked as included among those freed by the bail fund were a number of individuals who would go on to commit violent crimes that in some cases resulted in deaths.
Shawn Michael Tillman was sentenced to life in prison for killing a man in St. Paul, Minnesota in 2022 while George Howard pled guilty to killing a man during a road rage incident in Minneapolis in 2021 after each had been released with help from fund collected. Likewise, the release Darnika Floyd preceded her being sentenced for stabbing a man to death after he refused to have sex with her.
“In a political campaign you need to find the message, but also the proof point to back up the message. Without both, it won’t stick for voters,” said Johnson who reflected on previous failed campaigns by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and now-Utah Sen. Mitt Romney.
“‘Crooked Hillary’ worked because of her emails. Attacks on trump for being high drama in 2020 had his aggressive debate performance and his record during COVID to back them up,” he said. “Romney seemed out of touch not just because Obama kept saying it but also because he had his 47 percent comment to back it up.”
As previous polling from J.L. Partners found Trump with a marginal lead over Harris, the president could already be seen utilizing some of the promoted messaging on X as he shared an image that read, “TIM WALZ LET MINNESOTA BURN…KAMALA HARRIS BAILED OUT THE ONES WHO LIT THE MATCHES,” in addition to an ad that featured her in her own words discussing “Defund the Police” initiatives.
