Years in the making, on top of the unparalleled endurance of America’s Republic going on two and a half centuries, the United States Semiquincentennial celebrations are well underway ahead of July 4, 2026. As part of the lead-up to the anniversary of America’s independence, the Freedom 250 organization previewed its New Year’s Eve projection mapping display on the Washington Monument, “looking at America’s past, present, and what’s to come.”

Previews shared by the White House’s Rapid Response X account and Department of the Interior Secretary Doug Burgum captured what was “Coming Soon to the Washington Monument…” with the cabinet official stating, “America’s 250th birthday kicks off on New Year’s Eve! Come join other patriots starting tomorrow night at the Washington Monument to celebrate @250Freedom_!”

According to a posted schedule for the Illumination of America, projection mapping, the display was set to run six nights from New Year’s Eve into the start of 2026, with shows beginning every hour on the hour from 7 p.m. until around midnight.

While early testing of the projection had shown the monument lit up in varied colors and stripe patterns, in addition to the patriotic theme displaying 250, Freedom 250 CEO Keith Krach remained mum on what was in store for viewers Wednesday night as he spoke with NBC News.

“We’re excited that on New Year’s Eve, Freedom 250 is lighting up the Washington Monument as the world’s tallest birthday candle to kick off the nation’s 250th birthday year,” the Undersecretary of State during President Donald Trump’s first administration said. “It’ll be looking at America’s past, present, and what’s to come over the next 250 years.”

“Primarily, it will focus on the four pillars of Freedom 250, which is innovation, it’s also community and faith; it’s also on the beauty of our country as well,” expressed Krach. “And, you know, the other thing that’s great about that is that it’ll be something that will kind of be an animation, and I think everybody’s going to enjoy it. So from adults to kids and everything.”

Prior to the celebratory projection on all four sides, one side of the monument had been used to mark the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission in 2019.

Krach may have kept his lips sealed on the content of the projection, but he has no qualms about informing the public that the premiere night will include fireworks over the National Mall to kick off the new year. “There will be fireworks on New Year’s Eve, so that’ll be at midnight, of course. And then on July 4, the fireworks display we’re promising [will be] the largest fireworks display in history. That’s going to be spectacular as well.”

As for whether or not an image of the president would be included in any projection display, the CEO stated, “No, I don’t think he’s going to be projected on the Washington Monument, but he promised the greatest celebration ever for this 250th. And that’s really why Freedom 250 was created, to be able to create this kind of movement. It’s a nonpartisan movement.”

Following the New Year’s celebration, the next scheduled event currently listed was set to take place on May 17, when the National Mall will become a gathering place for prayer, uniting “dignitaries, faith leaders, and everyday Americans … in a public display of reflection, reverence, and prayer for our nation’s future.”
