‘We need new leadership’: McConnell skewered after claiming border bill offers ‘immediate solutions’

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) was hammered after urging Republicans to “carefully consider” the “dead on arrival” border deal package that was “worse than expected,” according to conservatives.

Republicans lined up to drag McConnell for this implied support of the open-borders deal crafted by Sens. James Lankford (R-Okla.), Kyrsten Sinema (I-Ariz.) and Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) The bill was unveiled Sunday and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) wants to bring it to the floor for a vote on Wednesday. That predictably gives Republicans almost no time to review it before the vote.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) rebuked McConnell on X, writing,”This feels like an elaborate practical joke. But it’s not funny. Not one bit. I cannot understand how any Republican would think this was a good idea—or anything other than an unmitigated disaster. WE NEED NEW LEADERSHIP — NOW.”

“The $118 billion deal, backed by the White House, includes $14 billion in aid to Israel, $60 billion to Ukraine, and also $20 billion for securing the southern border amid a massive increase in illegal migration. It also includes billions for critical partnerships in the Indo-Pacific, including Taiwan,” the Daily Mail reported.

Other conservatives chimed in against the bill.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson dealt the deal a death blow, writing, “I’ve seen enough. This bill is even worse than we expected, and won’t come close to ending the border catastrophe the President has created. As the lead Democrat negotiator proclaimed: Under this legislation, ‘the border never closes.’ If this bill reaches the House, it will be dead on arrival.”

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise declared that the bill would not receive a vote in the House period, “Here’s what the people pushing this ‘deal’ aren’t telling you: It accepts 5,000 illegal immigrants a day and gives automatic work permits to asylum recipients—a magnet for more illegal immigration.”

Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman Sen. Steve Daines slammed the bill as well, saying, “I can’t support a bill that doesn’t secure the border, provides taxpayer funded lawyers to illegal immigrants and gives billions to radical open borders groups. I’m a no.”

Former President Trump eviscerated the package, writing, “Only a fool, or a Radical Left Democrat, would vote for this horrendous Border Bill, which only gives Shutdown Authority after 5000 Encounters a day, when we already have the right to CLOSE THE BORDER NOW, which must be done. This Bill is a great gift to the Democrats, and a Death Wish for The Republican Party. It takes the HORRIBLE JOB the Democrats have done on Immigration and the Border, absolves them, and puts it all squarely on the shoulders of Republicans. Don’t be STUPID!!! We need a separate Border and Immigration Bill. It should not be tied to foreign aid in any way, shape, or form! The Democrats broke Immigration and the Border. They should fix it. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!”

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) proclaimed that any Republican who voted for the deal “must be paid off by foreign interests and is acting as a foreign agent.”

Donald Trump Jr. heatedly commented on X, “Mitch McConnell and James Lankford are selling out America with their Mass Amnesty/Ukraine Bailout deal. Pass it on.”

He added, “Insanity! We know that Mitch McConnell is clearly not mentally there after his numerous glitches this fall, but to watch him get rolled this way and still be in ‘Republican leadership’ is truly embarrassing for our party. Was there any GOP opposition to a Dem dream bill?”

Republicans demanded that the border be shut down and the law enforced. This bill reportedly didn’t even come close.

The response on X was nuclear:
