X users help reveal ‘surprising’ amount of deceitful accounts that show as ‘foreign’

Elon Musk introduced a new X feature that discloses the country locations of accounts, which threatens to “unmask” accounts based in foreign countries that portray themselves as Americans.

The move was seen as a positive step toward transparency, though NBC News was skeptical, reporting that “the effectiveness and accuracy of the feature were already in question, as security experts, social media researchers and two former X employees said the location information could be inaccurate or spoofed using widely available technology, such as virtual private networks (VPNs), to hide their locations.”

Nonetheless, Mollie Hemingway appealed to her followers to share any “surprising” findings that they’ve come across.

The Fox News contributor asked on X, “Ok so what are the most surprising accounts that turn out to be foreign?”

Oddly, many of the questionable accounts appear to be based in Africa. One such account claiming to be in New Jersey was discovered to be in Kenya — the account was deactivated after being exposed.

Of course, accuracy is a key factor — here’s a sampling of the responses to Hemingway, as seen on X:
