While most TikTok challenges, trends or pranks are annoying at worst, the “stranger bucket challenge” sent one new mother of twins to the hospital.
Lana Clay-Monaghan was targeted by a group of four teens who thought she’d be the perfect victim for this prank. Their desperate need for social media adoration prompted them to place the item over her head as she carefully shopped for baby items for her new twins.
“I was looking at some baby soap, I leaned down and then my whole world changed,” she recounted to local news outlet KTLA 5. “Everything went dark, quiet and there really was no air. I flipped off what was put over me and around my neck, and I turned around and looked over my left shoulder, and to my dismay, it was a group of individuals who were filming me.”
But that was not the end of the prank for Clay-Monaghan, a 30-year cancer survivor who also developed epilepsy later in life. She struggled to breathe and eventually fainted, waking up at the UN Irvine Medical center. The physical and psychological effects, she says, have been devastating.
“I keep looking over my shoulder,” she told the news. “I’m a nervous wreck. I cannot believe that in my community you can go to Target, be in Target maybe a mere ten to fifteen minutes, and someone would find it amusing to strategically find a female by themself in the baby aisle and think this would be funny or laughable for likes.”
Police believe the individuals who targeted Clay-Monaghan were trying to film a “stranger bucket challenge” video for TikTok. The “challenge” involves placing a bucket or similar item over a stranger’s head while shopping to film their reaction.
Authorities are still on the lookout for those involved in this incident, using surveillance photos and witness statements to track them down.
