ABC has pulled the plug on the Backstreet Boys’ Christmas special, “A Very Backstreet Holiday,” amid allegations that singer Nick Carter raped a special-needs 17-year-old girl while the band was on tour in 2001.
The special — a plug for the boy band’s 10th album of the same name — was set to air on ABC on December 14, Variety reports. In addition to Carter and the band’s other members, AJ McLean, Kevin Richardson, Brian Littrell, and Howie Dorough, Seth Rogen, Meghan Trainor, Rob Riggle, Nikki Glaser, Ron Funches, and Atsuko Okatsuka were scheduled to drop in on the festivities.
Shannon “Shay” Ruth, 39, announced at a Thursday press conference from the Los Angeles Beverly Hilton hotel a lawsuit against Carter in which she alleges the singer raped her and infected her with HPV when she was just 17. To make matters even more shocking, Ruth says she is autistic and lives with cerebral palsy.
The incident, she claims, took place in February 2001 after the band played a concert in Tacoma, Wash., as part of their Black & Blue tour.
According to the lawsuit, Ruth attended the show with her friend and, after the concert ended, waited in a line for an autograph.
Carter allegedly spotted Ruth while she was in line and invited her to “join him on his tour bus,” the filing claims.
“In the bus, Carter led Plaintiff to a table and asked if she wanted a beverage,” it reads.
Ruth asked for apple juice, but Carter said he had cranberry juice “and gave her a red-colored drink,” which Ruth said “tasted weird.”
“Carter said the beverage was ‘VIP juice for the tour,” the lawsuit states. “[Ruth] is informed and believes Carter’s ‘VIP juice’ was an alcohol cranberry juice concoction.”
The girl reportedly drank it “as to not to be rude.”
From there, the details laid out in the lawsuit become difficult to read.
According to the suit, Carter, who was 21 at the time, then took her to the bus’s bathroom and ordered her to “get on her knees.”
He pulled down his pants and “instructed” Ruth, who was a virgin at the time, to perform oral sex on him.
Raised in a religious home with the belief that sex — oral or otherwise — is not something you do before marriage, Ruth allegedly began to cry and was berated by the pop star. Ultimately “alone and under duress,” she complied.
Carter, Ruth claims, then took her to the bed “and proceeded to mount her.” She resisted, but he got forceful. She pleaded for him to stop. He didn’t.
And when the ordeal was over, Ruth says Carter grabbed her by the arm — hard enough to leave a bruise — and screamed at her, telling her that she was “a retarded little bitch” and no one would believe her if she told on him.
The singer allegedly threatened her, telling her she would go to jail if she told anyone, because “he was Nick Carter” and “he had the power to do that.”
While she didn’t report the crimes “for many years,” Ruth says Carter infected her with the human papillomavirus (HPV) when he raped her.
Carter has strenuously denied the allegations.
In a statement to Variety, the singer’s attorney, Michael Holtz, said, “This claim about an incident that supposedly took place more than 20 years ago is not only legally meritless but also entirely untrue.”
“Unfortunately, for several years now, Ms. Ruth has been manipulated into making false allegations about Nick – and those allegations have changed repeatedly and materially over time,” Holtz continued. “No one should be fooled by a press stunt orchestrated by an opportunistic lawyer – there is nothing to this claim whatsoever, which we have no doubt the courts will quickly realize.”
But this isn’t the first time someone has accused Carter of rape.
As BizPac Review reported in November 2017, Melissa Schuman, a fellow singer in the all-girl teen band DREAM, accused Carter of raping her in 2002, just a year after he allegedly raped Ruth.

Schuman was filming the 2004 made-for-TV movie “The Hollow” at the time, and her allegations are disturbingly familiar.
“After kissing for a moment, he took my hand and brought me into the bathroom adjacent to his office,” Schuman wrote on her personal blog. “He shut the door and we continued to kiss. I asked him what we were doing in there. He didn’t respond and continued to kiss me. He then pick me up, put me on the bathroom counter and started to unbutton my pants. I told him I didn’t want to go any further.”
“He didn’t listen,” she stated.
He then took her to the bedroom.
“Same as before his appetite was still not satisfied and now took me to the bedroom,” she continued. “It was late. The apartment was now dark and all you could hear was the remaining music in the living room. He threw me on the bed and climbed on top of me. Again, I told him that I was a virgin and I didn’t want to have sex. I told him that I was saving myself for my future husband. I said it over and over again.”
