In a recently conducted interview with NPR, Attorney General Merrick Garland appeared to leave open the possibility of former President Donald Trump being criminally charged in relation to the Jan. 6th riot at the U.S. Capitol.
In a write-up published Thursday, NPR noted that “Democrats in Congress and even some of Garland’s friends have worried he’ll shy away from the political firestorm that would result from charging a former commander-in-chief with a crime.”
The establishment outlet then published Garland’s response to apparently being questioned about this skepticism from Democrats and their allies.
“We are not avoiding cases that are political or cases that are controversial or sensitive. What we are avoiding is making decisions on a political basis, on a partisan basis,” the attorney general reportedly said.
“We begin with the cases that are right in front of us with the overt actions and then we build from there. And that is a process that we will continue to build until we hold everyone accountable who committed criminal acts with respect to January 6.”
While he didn’t name former President Trump, the context provided by NPR suggests that he’d basically said that Trump could wind up facing charges one day.
Of course, whether or not this will actually happen remains unclear, though it’s for certain that many members of the left have called for it:

I copied to this Twitter thread screenshots of Jan 6 committee motion released last night that notes they have good faith basis for concluding Trump committed crimes. I also note the criminal penalty for both. It’s time AG Merrick Garland charge Donald Trump for his crimes. https://t.co/WBpnHwdRz0

The Jan 6 Committee has unearthed enough evidence to charge Trump with multiple Federal Crimes. If the DOJ doesn’t step up, Trump will be allowed to shoot and kill the Rule of Law, The Constitution, and Democracy on 5th Ave. and get away with it.

Many members of the left have likewise slammed Garland for not having already charged the former president.
Look:
We don’t have the time. AG has been dragging his feet on indictments. Laurence Tribe said there is enough evidence released to the public to charge trump. The AG doesn’t have the guts to do it. After his lack of action, he wouldn’t have been a good judge either. Fear of decision

It’s past time for the Democratic members of Congress to stop worrying about what the @GOP are going to do. It is past time for the #DOJ to stop worrying about the possibility they might lose a case, and the political fallout whether they win or lose. Charge #tRump Now! #Jan6th

During his interview with NPR, Garland promised that he’s conducting “the most urgent investigation in the history of the Justice Department.”
He did not, however, explain why a one-day riot at the Capitol requires so much urgency but months and months of violent, deadly Black Lives Matter riots didn’t.
“Every FBI office, almost every U.S. attorney’s office in the country is working on this matter. We’ve issued thousands of subpoenas, seized and examined thousands of electronic devices, examined terabytes of data, thousands of hours of videos,” he added.
“People are working every day, 24-7, and are fully aware of how important this is. This had to do with the interference with the peaceful transfer of power from one administration to another. And it doesn’t get more important than that.”
Again, none of this was ever applied to BLM rioters. Nor is it being applied to the Antifa extremists who continue to wreak havoc on the West Coast thanks to the funding they collect from fundraisers like GoFundMe:
A person using the name “Princess Blair Unicorn” has set up multiple @gofundme campaigns for Portland #antifa members connected to violence. They include violent felony suspect @alissaazar & now, one of the shooters in the antifa vs furry deadly shooting. https://t.co/HyxhE9oIqG

Despite Garland’s admission to NPR to having an obsessive, “urgent” interest in investigating the Jan. 6th riot, members of the left still remain angry at him — perhaps even more so now than before.
Some leftists are even calling for him to be ousted:
Trump is above the law as long as AG Merrick Garland is in charge of @TheJusticeDept

And if @TheJusticeDept won’t act, it’s time to appoint a new AG. Garland can resign or be removed, but @POTUS promised to remove politics from the DoJ.
Frankly, doing this is the ONLY way to tell voters that not even rich white politicians are above the law. https://t.co/odceZKb1Bc pic.twitter.com/ihwVkzcwKy

✋🏼 Follow-up:
-After an entire year of “the most urgent investigation in the history of @TheJusticeDept,” you have yet to charge a single member of the Trump Administration.
