AOC gushes about ‘breaking bread’ with Mamdani in photo tweet, leaves herself wide open

U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was dragged after gushing over what an “honor” it was to “break bread” with New York City’s Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani.

The New York Democrat celebrated her fellow socialist’s win on Tuesday as she reposted his “highlight” of having lunch together.

“A busy first day as your Mayor-elect: early morning interviews, transition announcements, and meetings. More to say on all of it tomorrow,” Mamdani captioned his post-election message on X. “But a highlight was lunch with my Congresswoman @AOC at Laliguras Bistro in Jackson Heights.”

AOC responded by sharing his post and photos, adding, “From childcare to rent, New York should be affordable and safe for working families. Let’s get to work!”

“Over a meal of Nepalese food at Laliguras Bistro, including chili chicken with tingmo bread and aloo dum, the two democratic socialists discussed the need for generational change in their party. They also spoke about their responsibility as leaders of the movement, according to a person familiar with the conversation,” according to Gothamist.

“They also talked about making New York City a model of Democratic governance for the rest of the country, according to the person, who wasn’t authorized to detail private conversations,” the outlet added. “The one-hour meeting was described by the campaign as Mamdani’s first political meeting after winning the election.”

While Democrats celebrated Mamdani’s win as a referendum on President Donald Trump and his administration, many on social media dropped a reality check on the political posturing over the city’s first Muslim mayor. Including one post that suggested a different election in New York City’s future.

AOC declared that Mamdani’s campaign was “tasked with defeating the Old Guard” of the Democratic Party.

“And I do think that this moment – a lot of people who are willing to talk about party unity when it serves everybody, it puts those folks on notice,” she told MSNBC. “And I think it also puts folks on notice that we have a future to plan for, we have a future to fight for and we’re either going to do that together or you’re going to be left behind.”
