Democrats are gearing up to give Joe Biden a hero’s sendoff at the Democratic National Convention even as the president is reportedly still “angry” at having to abandon his re-election bid.
Former President Barack Obama, Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer all reportedly played a part in Biden’s ouster from the top of the Democratic ticket and the president is “frustrated and angry” with them, according to a report by Politico.
Multiple insiders told Politico’s Playbook that Biden views Pelosi as “ruthless” in her behind-the-scenes efforts to get him to step down and that she’s “willing to set aside long-term relationships” to ensure former President Donald Trump does not get re-elected.
“That’s who she has always been,” a senior White House official told the outlet.
One source claimed the president believes Pelosi “did what she had to do” and he has “grudgingly” come to terms with the seeming betrayal.
“Nancy ultimately is the party chair,” said one senior administration official.
In an interview with CBS News’s Bob Costa that aired on Sunday, Biden said his “Democratic colleagues” essentially overthrew him, and named one name in particular.
“And I was concerned if I stayed in the race, that would be the topic, you’d be interviewing me about why did Nancy Pelosi say, why did — and I thought it’d be a real distraction,” he said.

Just before Biden announced the end of his election campaign in July, Pelosi hailed him in a statement as “a patriotic American who has always put our country first. His legacy of vision, values, and leadership make him one of the most consequential Presidents in American history,”
“With love and gratitude to President Biden for always believing in the promise of America and giving people the opportunity to reach their fulfillment,” she added at the time. “God blessed America with Joe Biden’s greatness and goodness.”
The president is reportedly still “miffed” at Sen. Schumer for being part of the group leading a pressure campaign against him. And the wounds are still fresh as Biden reportedly “harbors resentment” against Obama for not telling him directly that he should drop out of the race.
“The schedule for the DNC reveals how Democrats plan to formalize the transfer from Biden to Vice President Kamala Harris,” Fox News reported.
“Biden will deliver his address on Monday night after Hillary Clinton and others. Two other Democratic former presidents will take the stage the following nights, with Obama headlining Tuesday and Bill Clinton on Wednesday, followed by Gov. Tim Walz. Harris will take the stage on Thursday, completing the transition,” the outlet added.
Meanwhile, when asked about the strained relationship between herself and Biden since the nomination fallout, Pelosi seemed clear that politics matters more than friendship.
“In our family, we have three generations of love for Joe Biden,” the former House Speaker told MSNBC’s Jen Psaki when she asked, “Is there a way back for your friendship?”
“My husband and I, of course, we’ve known him for a very long time – respect him, love him and Jill. He and Jill are so remarkable, and their family. Our kids have always loved them. I had pictures with him from our children growing up and now our grandchildren growing up,” Pelosi said Sunday.
“But the most important thing we have to do is to win the election, just to sustain his legacy and to have the legacy be to do even more in the presidency and the vice presidency of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz,” she added.
