Bill Maher rips AG Garland for call to appoint special counsel to go after Trump: ‘Why do it?’

Attorney General Merrick Garland has decided to assign a special counsel to oversee the Department of Justice’s investigations into former President Donald Trump, yet not all of the usual suspects on the left are satisfied.

Take vociferously anti-Trump liberal comedian Bill Maher. On the latest edition of HBO’s “Real Time,” he ranted and raved about what he characterized as a late, quietly-made decision that was purposefully announced on a Friday, and that evidently does nothing more than hand the problem off to somebody else.

“I guess he [Garland] did this on a Friday because he was maybe afraid. I don’t know. He spent two years thinking about whether he should appoint a special counsel or what he should do about Donald Trump being a criminal, and now he has made up his mind he’s going to give it to somebody else to do,” Maher mockingly said.

“He’s going to appoint a special counsel to look into the two crimes — would be overturning or trying to overturn the 2020 election, that little thing that Trump did, and then bringing the classified documents down to Mar-A-Lago and putting him in the shed with the croquet equipment,” he added.

Maher’s complaints came a few short hours after the DOJ officially announced the appointment of a special counsel.

“Garland announced today the appointment of former career Justice Department prosecutor and former chief prosecutor for the special court in The Hague, Jack Smith, to serve as Special Counsel to oversee two ongoing criminal investigations,” according to a press release from the DOJ.

“The first is the investigation … into whether any person or entity unlawfully interfered with the transfer of power following the 2020 presidential election or the certification of the Electoral College vote held on or about January 6, 2021. The second is the ongoing investigation involving classified documents and other presidential records, as well as the possible obstruction of that investigation,” the press release states.

Maher continued his rant by highlighting the resume of Jack Smith, the high-ranking U.S. attorney who was chosen by Garland to serve as special counsel, but turning around and complaining that no matter how respected he is, conservatives are still going to complain that the investigations into Trump are political.

“It doesn’t matter who, it doesn’t matter how, it doesn’t matter when, the right is just going to say it’s political. So what’s going to happen? Why do it?” he said.

Keep in mind that the right faces the exact same accusation from the left over its just-initiated investigations into President Joe Biden’s scandal-plagued son, Hunter Biden.

One of Maher’s guests, CNN anchor Laura Coates, responded by stating she agrees with the assignment of a special counsel, saying “if you can do one thing to undercut the argument that this is all politics, why not try?”

“You gotta! He can’t let a guy get away with it! That’s a bigger precedent! I know there’s some bad sides of doing it,” Maher quickly responded.

He later also complained about the DOJ not having pressed charges immediately after the Jan. 6th riot of 2021.

“If right after January 6th, they had moved [forward with the investigation] … because I kept saying on this show like what the f–k is going on. If only we had some sort of Department of Justice who could do something — some sort of justice department,” he said.

Maher isn’t the only one who’s complained about the late appointment of a special counsel:

In a statement to Fox News, former President Donald Trump said for his part that he “won’t partake in” the special counsel’s investigation and called it “the worst politicization of justice in our country.”

“I have been going through this for six years — for six years I have been going through this, and I am not going to go through it anymore. And I hope the Republicans have the courage to fight this,” he said.

“I have been proven innocent for six years on everything — from fake impeachments to [former special counsel Robert] Mueller who found no collusion, and now I have to do it more? It is not acceptable. It is so unfair. It is so political,” he added.
