‘Brave New World’?! Disney scrubs long-time character’s Israeli background after backlash

Disney strikes again, this time taking a female Jewish superhero in the upcoming movie, “Captain America: Brave New World,” and scrubbing her Mossad/Israeli background as they bend the knee to Palestinian-loving anti-Semites.

The company has incensed the Jewish community with the brazenly anti-Israel move.

“Marvel Entertainment is making headlines in the Jewish press for changing the identity of a longtime Israeli character for her appearance in its forthcoming movie, ‘Captain America: Brave New World,'” Fox Business reported.

“The superhero that received an update is Ruth Bat-Seraph, first introduced in Marvel comics over 40 years ago as an agent to the Mossad, Israel’s international intelligence agency. She was a mutant with an alter-ego named Sabra, which is a Hebrew term for anyone born in Israel,” the media outlet added.

According to The Times of Israel, Disney was heavily harassed by anti-Israeli activists in 2022 after the company announced it would star Sabra in the “Captain America” film. Israeli actress Shira Haas will play the part.

“The studio said in a later statement that it would be ‘taking a different approach to the character Sabra’ for the movie set for release on Valentine’s Day next year,” Fox Business noted. “Now, Marvel is under fire from pro-Israel activists, who accuse the studio of bending to political pressure and ‘erasing’ Sabra’s Israeli identity.”

“In an announcement accompanying the release of the movie’s trailer last week, there is no mention of Sabra, but only the character’s original name, Ruth Bat-Seraph. There is also no mention of Israel or the Mossad, as Ruth Bat-Seraph is instead described as ‘a former Black Widow’ that is now a ‘high-ranking U.S. government official,'” the outlet continued.

In case you missed that reference above, it alludes to the Soviet Russian Black Widow super spy program. So… it appears that Disney is getting rid of the Jewish persona in favor of a Russian one. Go figure.

“The Israeli background of Marvel Comics superhero Sabra has been removed for her depiction in the upcoming Marvel Studios ‘Captain America: Brave New World’ movie, according to a Friday official summary of the film,” The Jerusalem Post wrote.

“While in the original Marvel comics continuity, Ruth Bat-Seraph serves as the Mossad agent mutant superhero Sabra, in a recent summary for the February 2025 film Bat-Seraph is described as a former member of the Soviet Russian Black Widow super spy program — the same program that trained Scarlett Johansson’s Avenger of the same name,” the media outlet noted.

They also ditched the Star of David, “The original blue and white outfit and Star of David emblazoned on Sabra’s chest is also nowhere to be found. Despite the changes, many are still calling for a boycott of the film.”

“The controversy surrounding Haas’ character dates back to 2022 when Marvel announced that the Israeli actress, known for her roles in ‘Shtisel,’ ‘Unorthodox’ and ‘A Tale of Love and Darkness’ would be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the superheroine Sabra,” The Jerusalem Post reported.

“While pro-Israel fans rejoiced, the backlash among Palestinians and their supporters was swift and vocal, with many claiming the decision was offensive to those who associate the character’s name with the 1982 Sabra and Chatila massacre in Beirut, which occurred during Israel’s invasion of Lebanon,” the outlet pointed out.

Pro-Israel activist Hen Mazzig eviscerated Disney’s changes on X and accused Marvel of eliminating “the only Israeli superhero.”

“The erasure of Sabra’s Jewish identity is also a slap in the face to the American Jews who literally invented the comic book superhero genre. Superman, the first superhero, was invented by two Jewish American kids during the Great Depression. Superman’s original name, Kal-El, means “all is God” in Hebrew. Famously, Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster weren’t recognised for their contribution for decades, but eventually gained the credit they were due,” he stated according to Hot Air.

“Superman, Batman, Captain America, Spider-Man, the Hulk, the Fantastic Four, the entire Avengers franchise and the X-Men — all of these characters, and arguably the superhero genre itself, were pioneered by Jews as a way to inspire kids that good will prevail over evil,” Mazzig asserted.
