In the world of sophomoric popularity contests that is the Democratic Party, policies and achievements were readily supplanted with well-meaning and feelings, genuine or otherwise. To that end, the fawnfest recalibrated to complete the coronation of Vice President Kamala Harris as nominee had a programming gap that left CNN anchors wondering about the potential of Beyoncé or Taylor Swift making an appearance.

“New details for you this morning about which A-list celebrities are planning to be at the Democratic National Convention here in Chicago, where we are, as the party formally crowns Kamala Harris as its nominee. Rumors are swirling big time,” said anchor Sara Sidner during “CNN News Central.”

“Everybody’s talking about it, that two of the biggest names in music: Beyoncé, Taylor Swift-” she continued as co-anchor John Berman interrupted, “Is that of the biggest names or the biggest names.”

“I think the two biggest. Okay,” the banter continued, “we don’t have to parse it. Beyoncé, Taylor Swift — might make appearances.”

“That was the might. How about the will? Who do we know that will be here?” posited Berman as correspondent Elizabeth Wagmeister was brought in to add further details as well as speculation.

“By the way, I’m with you, John,” she began, furthering the fangirling. “They are the two biggest names of course…all eyes are on whether they will come. But who we do know will be there,” Wagmeister went on as she confirmed celebrity hosts from Monday through Thursday were reported as Tony Goldwyn, Ana Navarro, Mindy Kaling, and Kerry Washington.

“Now convention officials tell me that the role of these hosts is going to be similar to something at the Oscars, like an award show. They’ll come on, they’ll make an introduction and then they’ll reappear throughout the night to help guide the audience through programming.”

The correspondent noted John Legend and Joan Jett were expected to be performing at a party in Chicago and Julia Louis-Dreyfus was hosting a panel with female Democratic governors prompting Sidner to state without a hint of irony, “You can’t forget Veep! I mean, she did a whole show about this situation.”

Sidner proceeded to probe speculation further, “Beyoncé and Taylor, are they gonna be here? Because that’s what we really want to know.”

Reminding that Beyoncé offered Harris the use of her song “Freedom” for the campaign, Wagmeister had no confirmation but noted how quickly Swift could be there in a similar fashion to how she’d gone out of her way to attend the Super Bowl to support her boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.

“Now remember, she is on tour right now. She’s in London, so she can’t be there tonight. She can’t be there tomorrow. She’s a little busy in London, but if her show ends on Tuesday, she could hop on a private jet and she could be there by Wednesday!” she suggested. “So we will see. But Taylor also comes back to the U.S. in October, so there is time for her to make an endorsement if she chooses to.”

While Swift had endorsed the Biden-Harris campaign in 2020 and a coalition of her fans was pushing for her to continue her outspoken support for the Democratic Party, former President Donald Trump had picked up on a counter push by “Swifties for Trump” that happened to use some AI-generated images as he declared, “I accept!”

The post came only days after the Trump campaign, supporters and the president himself had ripped Harris for appearing to use AI images to make it appear as though her crowds were larger than they really were.

It also came after the president had reportedly commented to Variety about Swift in June, “She’s got a great star quality, she really does.”

“I think she’s beautiful — very beautiful! I find her very beautiful. I think she’s liberal,” he was quoted as saying. “She probably doesn’t like Trump. I hear she’s very talented. I think she’s very beautiful, actually — unusually beautiful!”

Trump had also said, “She’s legitimately liberal? It’s not an act? It surprises me that a country star can be successful being liberal.”
