Canada Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced Monday that he has tested positive for COVID-19, seems to have forgotten one of the most basic rules in politics, that being when in a hole stop digging.
And on that note, Trudeau was effectively buried in a blistering floor speech by Candice Bergen, deputy leader of the Conservative Party.
Trudeau was branded a “Coward-19” for citing security concerns to flee the truck driver protest in Ottawa, after refusing to meet with the protesters, and amid all the attention opted to insult them instead.
“Over the past few days, Canadians were shocked and, frankly, disgusted by the behavior displayed by some people protesting in our nation’s capital,” the prime minister said. “We are not intimidated by those who hurl insults and abuse at small business workers, and steal food from the homeless.”
“Freedom of expression, assembly and association are cornerstones of democracy but Nazi symbolism, racist imagery and desecration of war memorials are not,” Trudeau added. “It is an insult to memory and truth, hate can never be the answer.”
Nazi symbols were seen in protest photos, likening Covid-19 restrictions to Nazi persecution, as well as a Confederate flag, which is not to say this was representative of the overall protest.
Bergen, who has served as Deputy Leader of the Conservative Party since September 2020, took great exception to the prime minister’s remarks.
“SAVAGE Canadian Conservative Leader Puts Final NAIL in Trudeau’s Coffin in Parliament… in Front of the Whole World,” tweeted conservative commentator Benny Johnson, in sharing the footage.

“I do get very defensive of Canadians who are outside today. Patriotic peace-loving Canadians who are called misogynist and racist by the Prime Minister,” Bergen said. “So again, I will ask the Prime Minister who, may I remind this house, wore blackface on more times than he can remember, apologize to the patriotic, peace-loving Canadians who are outside right now just asking to be heard. Will he speak to them?”
Her remarks drew a standing ovation for her side of the aisle.
Bergen released a statement last week in support of the truck drivers’ opposition to a vaccine mandate.
“Last week, Justin Trudeau dealt our already crumbling supply chain another blow. Over 26,000 truckers are now unable to transport goods across the Canada-U.S. border, which will only drive inflation higher than it’s been in over 30 years,” Bergen said in the release.
“Conservatives have been opposed to federally mandated vaccines since Trudeau introduced them; and we oppose the mandatory vaccine on Canadian truckers. These men and women who ship our goods and bring much needed supplies into Canada are essential and have worked tirelessly over the pandemic to keep grocery shelves stocked and supplies moving,” she said. “Hamstringing this essential industry is nothing more than a political move to further divide Canadians. We need a realistic and flexible approach to keeping Canadians safe, and this sweeping mandate won’t accomplish that.”
The conservative politician also took to Twitter with a message to the public: “Don’t be fooled! The Liberals and their friends in the media are misleading the public about what’s really happening on Parliament Hill.”
She shared a video clip of her debating the opposition that was even more fiery than the Trudeau putdown:

Bergen shared several photos of the protesters online, saying they “have had enough of the lockdowns and broken promises. They deserve to be heard and they deserve respect.”
Here are some Manitobans I met and talked with last night. These were the “unacceptable views“ they were expressing: they and millions like them have had enough of the lockdowns and broken promises. They deserve to be heard and they deserve respect. #FreedomConvoyCanada2022 pic.twitter.com/JCXLRlo7md

That sentiment was echoed by another conservative member of Parliament, who shared a few photos as well:
I talked with many that are in Ottawa exercising their freedom to peacefully protest. There are many from back home here in Ottawa. These are patriotic Canadians that are frustrated. There are young and old, urban and rural. They deserve to be heard and they deserve respect! pic.twitter.com/Be24C00xlM

Here’s a quick sampling of responses to Bergen’s beatdown from Twitter:
