Some Democrats are concerned that President Joe Biden has sacrificed their supposed “moral high ground” by pardoning his son.
For years, Democrats smeared President-elect Donald Trump by accusing him of “brazen lying,” “shattering of norms,” and “alleged corruption.” They then turned around and portrayed themselves as the exact opposite of everything they’d accused him of being.
But then on Sunday, President Biden unexpectedly shattered a norm of his own by issuing a blanket, 10-year pardon to his son, Hunter.
“By pardoning Hunter on gun and tax convictions — or any other crimes he ‘may have committed’ between Jan. 1, 2014, and Dec. 1, 2024 — some Democrats believe Biden has sacrificed a moral high ground that’s been foundational to the party’s identity in the Trump era,” Axios notes.
Case in point:
President Biden’s decision to pardon his son was wrong. A president’s family and allies shouldn’t get special treatment. This was an improper use of power, it erodes trust in our government, and it emboldens others to bend justice to suit their interests.

President Biden’s pardon of his son confirms a common belief I hear in Southwest Washington: that well-connected people are often gifted special treatment by a two-tier justice system.
The President made the wrong decision. No family should be above the law.

President Biden’s decision put personal interest ahead of duty and further erodes Americans’ faith that the justice system is fair and equal for all. https://t.co/xEuRjfNhZ0

There’s more where that came from.
“He said he wasn’t going to do it,” Sen. Tim Kaine told reporters, according to the Financial Times. “He shouldn’t have broken his promise.”
Colorado Gov. Jared Polis also slammed the pardon.
“While as a father I certainly understand President @JoeBiden’s natural desire to help his son by pardoning him, I am disappointed that he put his family ahead of the country,” he wrote in a lengthy tweet. “This is a bad precedent that could be abused by later Presidents and will sadly tarnish his reputation.”
“When you become President, your role is Pater familias of the nation. Hunter brought the legal trouble he faced on himself, and one can sympathize with his struggles while also acknowledging that no one is above the law, not a President and not a President’s son,” he added.
Rep. Jason Crow, also of Colorado, concurred.
“The Hunter Biden pardon was a mistake,” he wrote in a tweet. “I sympathize with a father’s love, especially in a family that has experienced so much personal tragedy. I also understand the legal arguments in favor of a pardon. But Presidential pardons are never judged solely on the merits of the case, particularly when it involves a family member.”
“Presidents hold enormous power and responsibility and must be held to a higher standard. They must instill trust and promote the American people’s faith in their democracy. And right now, upholding the fabric of our democracy is one of our most important tasks,” he added.
Even some Never Trump “Republicans” slammed Biden’s pardon:
Biden is doing exactly the wrong thing by pardoning Hunter. This will now give Trump the license to pardon all of his supporters including those from Jan 6th.

Former Republican Rep. Joe Walsh told MSNBC he worried Trump would twist the pardon to his own ends.
“This just furthers the cynicism that people have about politics and that cynicism strengthens Trump because Trump can just say, ‘I’m not a unique threat. Everybody does this,'” former Republican Rep. Joe Walsh said on MSNBC, according to the Los Angeles Times.
“This was a selfish move by Biden, which politically only strengthens Trump. It’s just deflating,” he added.
As for regular ol’ Republican voters, many of them were amused by the idea that Democrats EVER held any moral high ground.
Look:
Dems thinking they had the moral high ground ground perfectly sums up why they lost.

I don’t know what those Democrats think is “moral ground” but it certainly didn’t start with Hunter’s sweeping pardon.

What moral high ground? The Democratic party went to sleaze mode right after JFK was shot. And it’s gone way downhill form there. They can’t even clean up their own cities ffs.

The party of late term abortion, stranding allies in Afghanistan, selling our kids to teachers unions, and green-lighting the migrant humanitarian crisis hasn’t had any moral high ground in quite some time.
