Dem coup to topple Biden still in play despite Trump assassination attempt

Democrats have revived their coup against President Joe Biden now that the assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump is no longer a trending topic.

In the days immediately after the attempt, Democrats quieted their attacks on Biden. But that respite is officially over, with Dems now re-aiming their fire at Biden and his allies.

What inspired the latest round of attacks is a report revealing that the Democrat National Committee intends to hold a virtual delegate roll call as early as next week, weeks out from the Democrat National Convention.

“The process will effectively begin when the rules committee of the Democratic National Convention meets on a video call at 11 a.m. on Friday [the 19th], followed by another party group on Sunday [the 21st],” according to The New York Times.

“All of the more than 4,000 delegates are expected to begin casting their ballots as soon as Monday [the 22nd], a process that is likely to take about a week. After that, the committee is expected to quickly hold the roll call, a tradition that typically occurs on the convention floor but is being held virtually this year,” the Times noted.

The goal is to confirm Biden as the 2024 presidential nominee before the convention. It’s a goal that a number of Democrats find troubling.

“[A] group of House Democrats who question whether he should forge ahead is trying to rally support for changing the nominating path to allow for potential challenges at the convention,” the Times reported.

Led by California Rep. Jared Huffman, the group has been circulating a letter calling on the DNC to delay nominating the president until the convention.

Huffman’s letter says that he and others “share serious concerns about plans to hold virtual roll call as early as July 21,” according to the Times.

“I just think it’s a terrible idea for the DNC to do this, I just think people see right through it, and at a time when we have this huge enthusiasm gap with the Republicans, to do a stunt like this is just going to make it worse,” he said in a statement to Axios.

Texas Rep. Lloyd Doggett, one of the signers of the letter, said in a statement that he is “working with Jared Huffman and other colleagues to oppose short-circuiting the nomination process.”

“Such misguided DNC action would be contrary to President Biden’s own recommendation that those seeking an alternative nominee come to the convention,” he added.

DNC chair Jaime Harrison has already dismissed the letter.

“We’re moving forward with a virtual roll call, and the timeline for that process remains on schedule and unchanged from when the D.N.C. made that decision in May,” he said.

The virtual roll call is also reportedly opposed by Pass the Torch, an independent group.

Aaron Regunberg, a Pass the Torch organizer, told the Times it’s “a terrible idea” that would “ram through this nomination before we have this debate as a party.”

He added that it would “deeply undermine the morale of Democrats — from delegates, volunteers, grass-roots organizers and donors to ordinary voters — at the worst possible time.”

Meanwhile, longtime GOP strategist Karl Rove made the case on Tuesday that the “only way” for Democrats to win the 2024 presidential election is if they drop Biden ASAP.

“I don’t think they can win with Joe Biden,” he told a Fox Business Network host. “I think the only way is to find a way for him to say, ‘I’m not running’ and to replace him at the Democratic convention in August and hope to God that that gives them a shot.”

As proof, he cited a recent Fox News poll.

“It got ignored because of the events of Saturday night, but it had three questions in there that were very interesting,” he said. “They [the polls] said, basically, ‘Do you think Joe Biden has the mental fitness and the physical stamina to be president?’ No. Overwhelmingly, no. I think the number was 71%.”

“‘Do you think that he is involved, that his mental health and it hurts the national security of the United States?’ Absolutely, yes. ‘Do you think he’s involved in decision-making?’ Sixty-three percent said only somewhat or not at all. Those are three devastating questions with incredibly bad numbers for Joe Biden. And I frankly can’t see how he can recover from the kind of sentiment that is out there,” he added.
