New York City Mayor Eric Adams flew into Florida and is set to meet with President-elect Donald Trump days before the transfer of power in Washington, D.C.
According to aides for the Democrat mayor who was indicted on federal corruption charges, the two men will be discussing “New Yorkers’ priorities” at their meet-up at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach on Friday.
There was “no advance announcement” of the trip, according to The New York Times which noted that Adams “requested the meeting, according to two people with knowledge of the trip.”
“The city is funding the trip because it has a ‘city purpose,’ the mayor’s spokeswoman said. No other city officials will accompany the mayor, aside from his security detail, she added,” the Times reported.
Adams, who was indicted in September on five federal corruption charges, joins a growing list of names who have traveled to Trump’s Florida home ahead of his inauguration, including Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania who became the first sitting Democrat to do so.
“Mayor Adams has made quite clear his willingness to work with President-elect Trump and his incoming administration on behalf of New Yorkers — and that partnership with the federal government is critical to New York City’s success,” Fabien Levy, the mayor’s spokesman, told the Times.
“The mayor looks forward to having a productive conversation with the incoming president on how we can move our city and country forward,” he added.
Adams’ trip and the thoughts that he could be hoping for a presidential pardon once Trump is sworn in have riled up his critics, including some who will be running against him in the upcoming Democratic primary.
“Pardon me? The Trump agenda is not going to help move our city or the country forward. This pilgrimage is clearly about something else,” State Sen. Zellnor Myrie said in a statement.
“He’s willing to let our neighbors be deported and our city’s budget be slashed, if it helps him get a pardon from our president,” said State Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani.
The Democrat candidate added that the trip was “a pathetic and embarrassing gambit by a disgraced mayor to keep himself out of federal prison, nothing more.”
“Eric Adams should state immediately that he will not seek or accept a pardon from Donald Trump,” said Brad Lander, the New York City comptroller. “New Yorkers deserve to know that their mayor is putting their interests ahead of his own.”

New Yorkers deserve to know that their Mayor is putting their interests ahead of his own—and whether our tax dollars, or Turkish Airlines, will be financing his trip to Florida.

Asked about pardoning Adams, Trump said at a press conference last month, “I think that he was treated pretty unfairly,” and added, “I would certainly look at it.”
Back in October, Trump roasted the New York City mayor over his legal troubles, commiserating with him over the battles he faced himself.
“Mayor Adams, good luck with everything,” Trump said. “Mr. Mayor, you’re peanuts compared to what they’ve done to me. And you’re gonna be ok.”
