Eric Adams calls on FEMA to ban cities from busing illegal immigrants into NYC as numbers explode

New York City Mayor Eric Adams is asking the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to ban other cities and states from busing in illegal immigrants as the number of so-called asylum seekers explodes causing the city’s system and resources to become even more overloaded.

The number of illegal immigrants arriving hit 1,300 over a three-day period this week causing panic among the Big Apple’s leaders, according to sources who spoke with the New York Post on Thursday.

Adams was visibly frustrated as he implored FEMA to do something during an internal budget briefing Wednesday. He reportedly stated that the agency should crack down on cities using federal grant money to bus in migrants to New York so the city isn’t burdened further by the cost of providing aid to them, according to sources.

“There was an issue about the FEMA money that other places are getting that they can use that money to rent buses. Why are we giving money to send people to different cities?” Adams is said to have asked.

The three-day period that saw the huge influx started on Sunday, April 23, and went to Wednesday, April 26. The mayor’s carping followed the influx of 1,300 illegal immigrants that were part of a surge of 2,300 that have arrived since April 19.

During that span of time, eight new emergency shelters were opened up to handle the new arrivals. It’s not clear where those facilities are located.

Adams slammed the White House last week for turning its back on New York City and triggering “one of the largest humanitarian crises that this city has ever experienced.” He alleged the crisis has “destroyed” the city. The mayor has repeatedly begged for federal assistance, warning that the number of illegal immigrants arriving in the Big Apple is causing a financial burden that threatens the city.

“The national government has turned its back on New York City,” Adams asserted. “Every service in this city is going to be impacted by the asylum seeker crisis.”

FEMA is preparing to dole out $800 million in migrant-related federal aid at the end of May to help cities combat the cost of housing illegal immigrants. New York City has applied for $650 million of that amount to keep its budget afloat. So far, the city has received $8 million in funding for the crisis.

Adams met privately with FEMA’s administrator, Deanne Criswell, and regional administrator, David Warrington in Washington, DC last week, according to City Hall.

“During the FEMA meeting last week, we said that those [cities] that receive FEMA funding should ensure that they are acting in a way that doesn’t put additional strain on other cities, like unannounced without any kind of coordination, not providing services via buses,” a source told the New York Post. “If you’re just a pass-through city and if you’re not sheltering them then why should you get the FEMA money?”

Texas GOP Gov. Greg Abbott started the trend of sending illegal immigrants to New York City last spring. Since that time, 58,300 illegal immigrants have made their way to the Big Apple. A stunning 36,100 are currently being housed in city-run shelters and humanitarian relief centers. That includes 120 emergency hotels and shelters housing migrants across the five boroughs.

During Adams’ budget address that he gave on Wednesday, which amounts to $106.7 billion according to the New York Post, he claimed that the number of illegal immigrants arriving in New York City would hit more than 70,000 by June 2024.

The cost of providing shelter, food, clothing, and other services to illegal aliens will reportedly be more than $4.3 billion by the end of next year. Admas says it will increase to $5.3 billion by 2025.

According to the Office of Budget and Management, New York City has already spent $817 million on the migrant crisis between July 2022 and March.

If the influx of illegal immigrants keeps increasing the way it is now, Adams warned that the city might have to reassess the budget figures and “redo the numbers.”

“The issue is not the asylum seeker. The issue is the fact that the national government is not doing its job,” he declared, evidently not getting that illegal immigrants are indeed the issue as well as not closing the border.

“Even if our optimistic projections are met, state and federal aid will cover just under 40% of our costs — leaving New Yorkers to pay the rest,” Adams charged.
