A taste of accountability came with a guilty plea of conspiracy that begged the question, “Could his plea involve implicating Anthony Fauci?”
In addition to a blanket pardon for Dr. Anthony “The Science™” Fauci courtesy of President Joe “Autopen” Biden, the expiration of the statute of limitations on a gain-of-function criminal referral in May left many suspecting justice would never come for the career bureaucrat in this life over alleged crimes against humanity.
While a diary release, phone records and multiple state investigations have assured continued exposure of the then-National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) director, some tangible accountability did come as the Justice Department announced a guilty plea by his associate, Dr. David Morens, for conspiracy to defraud the United States.
Having served as a senior adviser at the NIAID from 2006 to 2022, a DOJ press release detailed that Morens and co-conspirators “conspired during the COVID-19 pandemic to defraud the United States after [National Institutes of Health] terminated Co-Conspirator 1’s grant. NIH terminated the grant, Understanding the Risk of Bat Coronavirus Emergence, based on allegations that COVID-19 emerged from the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) in Wuhan, China. NIAID awarded the grant to Company 1 and Co-Conspirator 1, who made a subaward to the WIV.”

As previously reported, Morens was indicted in April after the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic found evidence he used his personal email as a means to circumvent Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests.
Among the communications released by the subcommittee, a message to EcoHealth President Peter Daszak read, “I can either send stuff to Tony on his private Gmail, or hand it to him at work or at his house. He is too smart to let colleagues send him stuff that could cause trouble.”
Of course, the ongoing investigation of Fauci has proven he was not “too smart” where it concerned keeping a narcissistic detailed log of his thoughts throughout COVID.
Additionally, a 2021 email from Morens read, “i learned from our foia lady here how to make emails disappear after i am foia’d but before the search starts so i think we are all safe. Plus i deleted most of those earlier emails after sending them to gmail [sic].”
While Fauci opted to plead the Fifth Amendment over 100 times after being subpoenaed by the U.S. Senate, the career bureaucrat — now facing investigations led by multiple state attorneys general — was not so silent during a 2024 hearing where he testified, “Another issue is that of Dr. David Morens, who has the title of Senior Advisor to the NIAID Director and who recently began–has been investigated for conduct unbecoming a government official.”
“Naturally, given his title, a connection is made to me,” said Fauci. “With respect to his recent testimony before this Subcommittee, I knew nothing of Dr. Morens’s actions regarding Dr. Daszak, EcoHealth, or his emails.”
According to Fauci’s diary, the day before Morens sent the email about how “smart” the NIAID director is, Fauci wrote on April 20, 2021:
“It appears that a few of the far right grantees of NIAID are joining with the radical right wing people in the public as well as people in the Congress such as congressman Jim Jordan and Senator Rand Paul to try and connect me with the virus from WUHAN. In fact, David Morens has heard that these people are trying to ‘bring me down’ … They are saying that I deliberatly worked with the Chinese together with Peter Daszak to create a virus that would be released to the world. This sounds very much like a way-out conspiracy theory, which it is. However, there are enough crazy people around to make this a problem. I am going to arrange for a phone call with David in order to determine more details as to what is going on. It is my suspicion that some of these so-called NIAID grantees are Imperiale and Rich Ebright. They have been complaining about gain of function research for years. They have even publicly made the claim that when they speak against anything that I want I will prevent them from getting their grants. Everybody knows that this is preposterous, but they in fact are preposterous. Let us see if in fact these are the villains.” [emphasis added]
The DOJ detailed that a sentence for Morens could see the 78-year-old face up to five years in prison.
Meanwhile, both Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson (R) and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul (R) reacted to the guilty plea. The former wrote, “The COVID cartel has one less member. Accountability has begun, and much more needs to follow. Kudos to my PSI staff for finding the email that initially exposed David Morens.”
The latter posited, “Long-time Fauci ally pleads guilty. Could his plea involve implicating Anthony Fauci?”
