Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) is speaking out, denying claims that he had something to do with lobbying against Governor Josh Shapiro.
The senator flatly denied having anything to do with Vice President Kamala Harris not picking Shapiro as her running mate, despite many projections viewing him as the most likely candidate.
“No, I never directed anyone on my team or anyone to do that. So that’s just not true,” he told Ali Vitali on MSNBC Wednesday. He further denied having any concerns about Shapiro as a potential pick.
“My issue that ever existed with the current governor has nothing to do with anything that’s been talked about or any kind of public baggage,” he said, referencing the Politico article that publicized the allegations based on three anonymous sources “familiar with the conversations.” The piece claimed that Fetterman was concerned Shapiro was “excessively focused on his own personal ambitions.”
On Thursday, Democratic strategist James Carville threatened to take action against Fetterman for the alleged lobbying, calling him a “backstabber” on his “Politics War Room” podcast.
“The other thing is, is one of the great backstabbers in modern Democratic politics is John Fetterman, but I’m going to wait ’til after the election to deal with him. But he’s somebody that must be dealt with, and must be dealt with in real terms.”
Al Hunt, Carville’s co-host, agreed that Fetterman tried to “sandbag” the governor.
“And, of course, the reason he’s in the United States Senate is because of Shapiro. If you look at the Pennsylvania election returns, 2022, and you’ll get the idea of how Josh dragged this guy across the finish line,” Carville added.
This is a continuation of the long-standing beef between the strategist and the Pennsylvania Senator. In December, Fetterman told Carville to “shut the f**k up” after he warned President Joe Biden’s abysmal polling could spell disaster for his campaign.
“There’s a whole lifetime in politics between now and next November as well. I’m not worried about that,” the senator said. “And I’m very vocal about this, too, while there are Democrats that are being very critical about the president. … I’ll use this [as] another opportunity to tell James Carville to shut the f**k up.”
“My man hasn’t been relevant since grunge was a thing,” Fetterman jabbed. “And I don’t know why he believes it’s helpful to say these kinds of things about an incredibly difficult circumstance with an incredibly strong and decent and excellent president. I’ll never understand that.”
