Five rental vehicles used by Biden’s secret service burst into flames after Nantucket vacation

Cue the conspiracy theories or Karma after five rental vehicles that were used by the Secret Service while President Biden spent Thanksgiving vacation in Nantucket burst into flames in a parking lot one day after the first family left the elite Massachusetts island.

The five vehicles had been rented from Hertz to ferry the president and his family back and forth while being accompanied by the Secret Service. All of the cars went up in flames on Monday, according to security footage obtained by the Nantucket Current.

In the footage, firefighters can be seen hosing down what was left of one vehicle’s engine block. All five vehicles were different makes including a Chevy Suburban, Ford Explorer, Infiniti QX80, Ford Expedition, and a Jeep Gladiator. There were no injuries and it was only the Secret Service vehicles that caught on fire.

The cars were parked at the Nantucket Memorial Airport. The flames reportedly came within 40 feet of the facility’s 25,000-gallon jet fuel tanks. There is no known cause for the fire yet but some believe it stretches credibility to call it a coincidence.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation, but the Ford Expedition was under a battery recall by the manufacturer. While it had been scheduled for service under the recall, it had not been given a new battery, according to the Nantucket Current.

“At approximately 5:22 am Airport shift staff observed an active fire in the rental car overflow area through the Airport’s Closed Circuit Television System,” the airport commented via a statement. “Staff activated the Alert system and responded to the fire in Airport-3, where they were met by responding units from Nantucket Fire Department and Nantucket Police Department.”

“Combined fire resources responded and contained the fire. Several vehicles were damaged. The Airport is currently coordinating with rental car agencies and agency partners to ensure scene safety, There is no longer an active fire at this time: the Airport is open, and aeronautical operations are not affected,” the statement added.

Nantucket Fire Chief Michael Cranson praised the work of the airport firefighters and his crews, along with the rental car companies, Nantucket Police Department, and tow companies for a joint effort. The airport was briefly closed due to the fire but soon reopened.

The weekend had been pretty much uneventful for the Bidens who went shopping on Black Friday and celebrated Thanksgiving at a billionaire’s retreat. Family members at the waterfront compound along Nantucket Harbor included Ashley and Hunter Biden. The family has a tradition of spending the holiday on the island that spans 40 years. Nantucket is a small island about 30 miles off the coast of Cape Cod.

The 80-year-old president told reporters that there were not any discussions of a potential presidential run in 2024 while they vacationed.

In another strange turn of events, the Bidens visited the Nantucket Fire Department last week to thank firefighters for their service. They gave them pumpkin pies from Pie Shop in Washington, DC, according to the Nantucket Current.
