Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said that his office will probe Dr. Anthony S. Fauci to get to the bottom of the retired health official’s role during the COVID pandemic.
Fauci appeared on Capitol Hill on Wednesday, where he was to be grilled by Senate Republicans, but instead of answering their questions honestly, the longtime head of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) refused to cooperate.
The elfin 85-year-old jab jockey read off a self-serving opening statement and promptly invoked his Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination, infuriating Republicans who were deprived of their chance to nail Fauci to the wall over his misdeeds – and possible crimes – during one of the darkest periods in the nation’s history when he ruled the roost and reveled in his celebrity.
Uthmeier reacted to Fauci’s lack of transparency by announcing his own investigation.

“Fauci’s lack of candor to Congress is unbelievable,” the Sunshine State AG wrote in a Wednesday post to X. “My office is launching an investigation into Dr. Fauci. It’s past time we get the truth of what happened during COVID.”
It’s not clear what the investigation will entail and whether Fauci could be charged. He was given a retroactive and preventive pardon by former President Joe Biden on his last day in office, protecting him from potential prosecution.
“Therefore, although it pains me to do so because of the respect I have for the legislative branch of government and my decades-long record of cooperating with Congress, under the advice of my attorneys, I will invoke my right under the 5th Amendment of the Constitution to refrain from answering your questions,” Fauci said at the beginning of the hearing.

The lifelong government bureaucrat became the public face of COVID, an egomaniac who influenced national policy on matters that pushed the very boundaries of a free republic, including lockdowns, forced masking and vaccine mandates as well as the shuttering of schools which inflicted severe emotional pain on children and deprived them of vital classroom time and the ability to interact with other students and teachers.
He also allegedly funded dangerous “gain of function” research on viruses and has been less than forthcoming on the origins of the COVID virus, which is widely believed to have originated at the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China, one of the facilities that Fauci was accused of funding and trying to cover up his involvement.
“The COVID cover-up goes all the way to the top. Fauci funded the Wuhan lab. Senior intelligence officials hid classified evidence from the president himself. Scientists were silenced. Millions paid the price,” Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), the chair of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, said in a May post to X.
“Publicly, Anthony Fauci promoted the theory that the virus arose naturally, while privately, he was well aware of a mountain of evidence suggesting the virus originated in the lab. The American people deserve answers,” Paul said on Wednesday. “The decision to fund dangerous gain-of-function research in Wuhan, China, will likely go down in history as perhaps one of the worst public health decisions. Frankly, the American people deserve an apology.”
Fauci took the Fifth more than 100 times during the hearing, leaving Paul with little choice but to threaten a vote to hold him in contempt and refer him to the Justice Department.
Uthmeier has been willing to take on the untouchables, including the NFL over its discriminatory hiring practices.
