A young Florida lad is in hot water after a video began circulating of him chugging a Twisted Tea with a baby alligator in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant.
The 15-second video caught the attention of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and depicts the teen shotgunning the alcoholic beverage with the jaws of the small animal clamped down on the can. Now, charges are being filed against one of the teens for taking the animal without a permit.
“The lack of respect and responsibility shown toward this animal was disappointing to see….this serves as a strong reminder of the consequences of such behavior,” the organization warned.
Vernon Yates, the president of the Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation, also saw the video and took exception to the young man’s treatment of the gator.
“I could see multiple things in there that are just wrong. Wrong possession of it [and] wrong to just drop it on the hot pavement like that,” he explained.
He also suggested that everyone involved should be brought in.
“In my opinion, everyone they got on video that touched it needs to be brought in front of a judge, and then the judge needs to take some serious points of views to use as an example. This has got to stop.”
Given the animal’s seemingly lethargic behavior, Yates believes that the 15-second clip doesn’t show the entire story.
“He’s not very lively,” he said. “Normally, a little alligator about that size, when he hit the ground he should’ve hit it running.”
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservative Commission did have some good news, though, telling local news outlet 8 On Your Side that the baby gator was released into a retention pond in the area, and is thriving.
