Fmr. RI councilman’s crack pipe bust now the least of his worries as he’s accused of child molestation

The same Republican Rhode Island council member who was recently caught with a crackpipe in his hand has now been implicated in child molestation.

As previously reported, last month the police found since-resigned Cranston City Council member Matthew Reilly sitting incapacitated in his vehicle holding what appeared to be a crack pipe.

The stunning encounter led to Reilly being arrested and also later resigning both from the city council and also the Cranston Republican Party, where he’d been chair.

However, it now appears his troubles are far from over.

“Authorities held a 41-year-old former Cranston city councilman without bail on Thursday after he was charged with multiple counts of child molestation,” The Providence Journal reported Thursday.

“A complaint filed by the legal guardian of a 12-year-old girl led to a month-long investigation and Thursday’s arrest of Matthew Reilly in North Kingstown, said Cranston’s police chief, Col. Michael J. Winquist,” the paper added.

Reilly was reportedly charged with first-degree child molestation, second-degree child molestation, and enticing a person younger than 16 as per a set of crimes that took place on May 3rd, according to court records viewed by the Journal.

Appearing in court on Thursday, Reilly was ordered to be held without bail.

In a statement to The Daily Beast, his attorney, Michael J. Lepizzera, Jr., said that he’s entered a not-guilty plea.

“With these types of charges, I can see the general public and even close friends instantaneously turning their back on Mr. Reilly and drawing knee-jerk conclusions. I simply ask everyone to refrain from public ridicule and gossip and allow the legal process to unfold in the ordinary course,” he said.

“While we may not have a perfect system of justice in this country (as nothing is perfect), my 30 years as a lawyer allows me to state that we have as near perfect judicial system as could exist and we should trust in the system to be the final adjudicator of the facts, the law, and any legal outcome,” he added.

Liberal Democrats have for their part seized on Reilly’s bad behavior, using it to smear all Republicans as drug-consuming, child-molesting degenerates.

“RI Republican Matthew Reilly busted on drug charges accused of sex abuse. I have said it so many times, The Retrumplican cult is full of nothing but pedophiles, rapists, lawbreakers, racists, homophobes, the list is too long to put on here,” one critic tweeted.

“Yet another shining example of Republican crimes! Republicans are the problem, not the southern border!” one particularly naïve critic added.

FYI, the wide-open southern border has been linked to extensive child sex trafficking.

Plus, Democrat President Joe Biden’s own son was addicted to crack and the president himself has frequently been accused of touching and sniffing little children.

Dovetailing back to Reilly, he’s reportedly previously been open about his drug addiction.

“This is something I’ve kept private for a long time,” he said in 2021 while speaking out publicly about it for the time at a recovery event, adding that he’d at one point almost “lost everything” to drugs.

Then a stint in rehab in 2010 helped him get his act together, after which he sought to use his visibility as a politician to help promote sobriety.

“With the tools that you’re given through recovery, you’re capable of achieving greater things than you could have ever, prior to your addiction,” Reilly said. “Today, I have a career that I love helping people everyday in all different situations, and I wouldn’t give it up for the world. And I’ve also been given this great gift, to be a community leader and have my ideas heard,” he said in 2021.

Reilly also has some marriage skeletons in his closet.

“Last year, amid ugly divorce proceedings, Reilly’s estranged wife submitted filings in court that included text messages purporting to show him dosing their children with sleep medication so he could leave the house and have late-night sex with a law client,” according to the Daily Beast.

“The filings, which were uncovered by GoLocalProv, also alleged Reilly conspired with his client-cum-sex-partner to falsely accuse his ex-wife of violating a no-contact order,” Daily Beast notes.
