A Halloween horror story led to the arrest of a former news anchor who allegedly turned to deadly measures against her own mother “to save herself.”
Though some may enjoy sights of the macabre when it comes to the annual holiday and its ever-expanding “Spooky Season,” that was hardly the case in Wichita, Kansas Friday when a witness observed a woman whose hands and body were “filled with blood.” That woman was later identified as onetime KTVI anchor Angelynn Mock, who faces a possible charge of first-degree murder after allegedly stabbing her mother to death.
Detailing the incident, the Wichita Police Department issued a release explaining how officers responded to the scene shortly before 8 a.m. Friday to find 80-year-old Anita Avers “unresponsive in her bed with multiple stab wounds.”

Speaking with KAKE News, neighbor Alyssa Castro described events leading up to the arrival of law enforcement, as she had been in a car near the victim’s home.
“There was a woman who came and approached our vehicle with blood, like her hands were filled, her body was filled with blood, asking to call 911,” said Castro, who detailed that the 47-year-old suspect took her phone and retreated back into the house to call 911.
According to the Sedgwick County dispatchers, the woman claimed to have “stabbed [her] mother to save herself.”
Though first responders managed to transport Avers to nearby St. Francis Hospital, the elderly woman, who was a marriage and family therapist at Wichita Counseling Professionals, as confirmed by her husband, succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at 8:26 a.m.
Details reportedly gleaned from Mock’s LinkedIn profile were shared by The Economic Times, which wrote, “Mock previously worked as a news anchor and reporter for Fox 2 in St. Louis from 2011 to 2015 … She later transitioned into sales and was currently working for a data management software company at the time of her arrest …”
“Like, we never know what anyone is going through. This happened randomly, but as long as we were able to get 911 and see what we can do, that’s all I really care about,” added Castro to KAKE News regarding the fatal incident.
As of Sunday, though Mock was detailed as being charged with murder in the first-degree according to Sedgwick County Jail records, where she was being held on a $1 million bond, the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office confirmed to KAKE News that charges had yet to be filed in regard to the arrest.
“This case has not been presented to our office for a charging decision, so Ms. Mock has not been charged with any crime in relation to her arrest on Friday,” the office expressed in a statement as the investigation remained ongoing.
