‘Gang-related’ shooting at annual New Mexico biker rally leaves 3 dead

An annual New Mexico rally turned deadly Saturday leaving three dead and others injured in what was being reported as a “gang-related” shooting.

Attendees of the 41st Annual Red River Memorial Motorcycle Rally in Red River, New Mexico had reached roughly the halfway point of the gathering near the Colorado border when gunshots were reported around 5 p.m.

Images and footage from the scene captured response from first responders who, according to Mayor Linda Calhoun (R), had begun arriving within 30 seconds as members of the state police had been nearby.

While early reports differed with the number of deceased and injured, the New Mexico State Police had provided an update overnight that indicated there had been three confirmed deaths and five others injured receiving medical care out of the anticipated 28,000 participants in the event scheduled to run through Monday.

Of those, one individual had been airlifted to a hospital in Denver, Colorado while others had been transported to Holy Cross Hospital in Taos, New Mexico where the facility was placed under lockdown to maintain the safety of patients, staff and the victims, according to Questa del Rio News.

Along with the hospital lockdown, Taos Mayor Pascualito Maestas had declared a civil emergency following the incident, prohibiting the sale of alcohol and enacting a 10 p.m. curfew that expired at 4:00 a.m. Sunday while reserving the right to extend it up to 48 hours.

In a video posted on social media, Calhoun specified the concerns came from the incident being “gang-related” as she reported no first responders or Red River business employees were among the injured, “It was strictly a biker gang involved shooting.”

Among those how were present during the incident was Albuquerque Police Chief Harold Medina who, according to the New York Post had said, “What a helpless feeling not having a badge, gun or radio as State Police officers and others enter the restaurant and slowly everything closes down and you don’t even know if you can get to your car or if it’s in the scene.”

“Prayers for all the officers out there. This wave of gun violence impacts all of New Mexico large or small,” he added.

Though not ordered, Calhoun had issued her own statement on the investigation and its impact on local businesses that read, “In light of the active shooter incident that occurred this afternoon, we still have an active crime scene and ongoing investigation. No one will be allowed near the crime scene which includes most of Main Street.”

“Law enforcement will be out all night and all intersections will be monitored. State police, county sheriff department and our local law enforcement are requesting local businesses to remain closed Sunday, May 28th until they complete their investigation, and the crime scene is cleared,” she continued. “They recommend that only essential businesses outside the area of investigation remain open.”

“Our number one priority is the safety and well being of our local community. We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we work through this very difficult time together. We will continue to send updates as they transpire,” Calhoun concluded with numbers to contact for questions or concerns.
