‘He can’t bring peace’: Zelenskyy says Trump ‘can’t manage this war,’ invites him to Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskyy dismissed Donald Trump’s claim that, if he is re-elected in 2024, he could end the war between Ukraine and Russia “within 24 hours” and invited the former president to visit his country.

In an appearance on NBC News’s “Meet the Press” that aired on Sunday, Zelenskyy said Trump is “very welcome” in Ukraine.

“Former President Trump said that [in] about 24 hours, that he can manage it and finish the war,” Zelenskyy said. “For me, what can I say? So he’s very welcome as well. President Biden was here, and he — I think he understood some details which you can understand only being here. So, I invite President Trump.”

Zelenskyy said he wouldn’t need 24 hours to explain to Trump why he “can’t bring peace.”

“If he can come here, I will need 24 minutes — yes, 24 minutes, not more,” he said. “Yes. Not more — 24 minutes to explain [to] President Trump that he can’t manage this war” in 24 hours. “He can’t bring peace because of [Russian President Vladimir] Putin.”

“If he’s not trying, and if he’s not ready to give our territory for this terrible man, for Putin, if you are not ready to give it, if you are not ready to give our independence, he can’t manage it,” Zelenskyy stated.

Asked by host Kristen Welker if he believed Trump would back Ukraine in its war against Russia, the former comedian replied, “Really, I don’t know.”

“I hope that it depends not only on the president institutionally,” he said. “I think it depends on the opinion of Americans, of your society. I think that is most important.”

“I think it’s important in the United States and EU, the attitude of just ordinary people,” he continued. “It’s their support. It’s their money. It depends on them.”

“I know that they support Ukraine, love us,” Zelenskyy said. “And really, they understand our difficult, difficult war against Russia.”

Speaking to Welker on “Meet the Press” in September, Trump said, “I will get that war stopped very, very quickly.”

He stated he got along with Putin “really well” and he would “get him into a room, I would get Zelenskyy into a room, and I would get a deal worked out.”

When asked if he’s had any contact with Trump since he left office, Zelenskyy said, “No. That’s why he is very welcome.”

On X, many felt Zelenskyy shouldn’t be so quick to dismiss Trump’s ability to end the war.

“Sure he can – stop funding it, and you will go away,” wrote one user.

“Trump will have an agreement from Putin before seeing Zelensky,” predicted another. “Trump will only need 5-minutes with Zelensky.”

“I don’t think that’s how the conversation would go,” a third stated.

Others saw Zelenskyy’s statement as proof that he isn’t interested in ending the war.

“It sounds more to me as if he fears Trump will bring peace,” one user noted.
