Follow the money: Here are rich megadonors behind rise of New York AG suing Trump

George Soros, his family members, and other megadonors reportedly helped New York Attorney General Letitia James obtain the high-powered position she now boasts.

James is the AG now infamous for launching a civil lawsuit against former President Donald Trump on the grounds that he’d lied about the value of his assets. And so not surprisingly, she’s beloved by the world’s biggest Trump haters, including Soros.

“Financier George Soros has pushed at least $20,000 to James’ candidacy, including two $10,000 donations in 2021 and 2022. The 93-year-old billionaire has poured millions of dollars into efforts backing Biden and opposing Trump, and his Open Society Foundations has bankrolled a plethora of left-wing organizations that have worked on endeavors against the former president,” according to Fox News.

Meanwhile, Soros’ son, Jonathan, gave James’ campaign at least $10,000 between 2018 and 2022, and Jonathan’s wife, Jennifer Allan, gave $4,000 in 2022.

Next up is LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, a billionaire who, besides having “helped rehabilitate convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein’s image and visited his infamous island,” is reportedly one of James’ biggest donors.

“The records show that Hoffman donated $47,100 to her campaign in 2022. Hoffman has put large sums into efforts to torpedo Trump. He’s also come under fire for a past effort in an Alabama Senate race that the New York Times described as a ‘Russian-style social media deception’ campaign,” Fox News notes.

Next is Karla Jurvetson, a California-based physician who’s given James at least $67,300 since 2019, and who too “has spent significant amounts against Trump and propping up Biden as she’s positioned herself as a prominent donor in recent election cycles.”

“This no-name donor might not be on the tip of anyone’s tongue here, but she sure will help Tish put her campaign money where her mouth is in a big way,” a senior New York Democrat insider told the New York Post in 2021.

Gerard Kassar, chair of the Conservative Party of New York State, disagreed.

“We’ve always claimed that James was out of touch with the average New Yorker and I would say that her largest contributor being a West Coast psychiatrist certainly helps make that point,”  he told the Post.

According to the Post, “Jurvetson began [her donor spree] by backing James in August 2019 with a modest $1,000 contribution, which increased to $2,600 the next month and then $10,000 in December 2020.”

“Her biggest donation came on March 19, 2021, when Jurvetson kicked in $49,700. She made it a little more than two weeks after James’ office took on the probe into sexual harassment allegations against Gov. Andrew Cuomo, an investigation that would lead to his resignation in August,” the Post notes.

“Other notable contributors to James include director Spike Lee, former Meta executive Sheryl Sandberg, ex-Google CEO Eric Schmidt and billionaire environmentalist Tom Steyer,” according to Fox News.

Last up is New York City Judge Arthur Engoron, who’s presiding over James’ case against Trump. While he’s never donated to her, he’s exclusively donated to Democrats.

“Judge Arthur Engoron … has contributed exclusively to Democrats over the past 25 years, most of them directly to his local Democratic Party committees. New York’s campaign finance database shows Engoron has contributed over $5,000 to candidates and committees, including most recently in 2018 to the Manhattan Democrats,” The Daily Wire exclusively reported last month.

Dovetailing back to James’ lawsuit, she’d been signaling her desire to target him since she ran for office in 2018. At the time, she was asked on camera by a supporter what she’d say to people who weren’t interested in registering to vote in the 2020 election.

“I say one name: Donald Trump. That should motivate you. Get off your ass and vote,” James replies.

When the supporter then asked her whether she planned to sue Trump, she answered, “Oh, we’re definitely going to sue. We’re going to be a real pain in the ass. He’s going to know my name personally.”

But by no means was James’ glaring hostility toward the then-president anything new. In fact, she campaigned for New York attorney general by promising to take him down.

“I’m running for attorney general because I will never be afraid to challenge this illegitimate president when our fundamental rights are at stake,” she said in a campaign ad recorded in September 2018.
