Marine veteran Robert Sundin was killed Thursday morning protecting a restaurant employee from an armed robber.
The 70-year-old married father showed up to Scotty’s Restaurant in Vallejo, California every weekday at 5:30am. He would sit in the same seat, read the paper, and casually chat with the staff. He was truly the definition of a “regular” with the employees serving up the same breakfast on his visits.
But Thursday morning, Sundin pulled up to Scotty’s to see a robber, clad in a hoodie and ski mask. Employee Teresa Brasher, who says her life was saved by Sundin’s actions that morning, recounted the horrific day.
“[The robber] came up to my door, and he pointed his finger at me. He was pointing at my purse. I don’t know if he used his finger or a gun,” she said, according to Fox 2.
At that point, Sundin attempted to intervene.
“The guy grabs him. And I can see Bob pulling away like that, and that’s when I heard the gunshot go off,” she added.
Sundin passed away, and the robber fled the scene.
“He saved my life. That’s the type of person he was. He saved my life. He’s always going to be my guardian angel for life,” Brasher said.

“God wasn’t ready for me, but they had a place for Bob up there.”
When Sundin wasn’t at Scotty’s, he was working in the Veteran’s Affairs healthcare system or volunteering at First Assembly of God, a church he frequented.
“If there was a need he saw at the church, he met it. He was the first person to arrive and last to leave,” said Pastor Eric Luca.
Scotty’s owner Nay Ung described Sundin as a “wonderful man,” the kind you just want to talk to.
“That’s what makes it hard. He was just such a wonderful man. It was just somebody you come across, and you feel comfortable talking to him.”
