New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ budding relationship with President Donald Trump may reportedly not be enough to save him.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has already begun having discussions about kicking him out of office over allegations that he’s been engaging in a quid pro quo with the Trump Department of Justice (DOJ), a source told the New York Post on Friday.
A day earlier, she herself admitted to MSNBC that she hadn’t yet ruled out forcefully ousting him, especially after she’d read now-former acting Manhattan US Attorney Danielle Sassoon’s resignation letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi.
Earlier this week Sassoon resigned in protest of the DOJ’s decision to drop Adams’ corruption case. She wrote a resignation letter to Bondi claiming that the DOJ only dropped the case because of the mayor’s willingness to assist with President Trump’s immigration crackdown:
“Adams’s attorneys repeatedly urged what amounted to a quid pro quo, indicating that Adams would be in a position to assist with the Department’s enforcement priorities only if the indictment were dismissed,” the resignation letter reads.
Responding to the resignation letter during her Thursday MSNBC appearance, Hochul told host Rachel Maddow that she wasn’t quite yet prepared to make a decision on how to proceed.
“The allegations are extremely concerning and serious, but I cannot as the governor of this state have a knee-jerk, politically motivated reaction like a lot of other people are saying right now,” she said.
“I have to do what’s smart, what’s right and I’m consulting with other leaders in government at this time. This just happened. I need some time to process this and figure out the right approach,” she added.
Well, it appears she’s had enough time to think things over …
So has Lt. Gov Antonio Delgado, who posted a tweet as early as Thursday calling for Adams to voluntarily resign in disgrace.

New York City deserves a Mayor accountable to the people, not beholden to the President. Mayor Adams should step down.

Race-baiter extraordinaire Al Sharpton has also turned against Adams.
“Now [Adam’s] damaged goods so [black leaders are] not going to spend political capital on him, but they are still torn because he’s the second black mayor,” one Democrat pundit told the Post.
And so has Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
“Adams must be removed,” she wrote this week on the leftist echo chamber known as Bluesky. “The city cannot sustain being governed for nearly a year by a Mayor who is being coerced by Trump admin in order to escape charges.”
“This corruption poses a real threat to the people of the city. He should have resigned a while ago, but will not. So it’s time for him to go,” she added.
All the drama started last Monday after the DOJ ordered federal prosecutors in Manhattan to drop all the charges against Adams on the grounds that the case against him was politically motivated.
In a letter to the prosecutors, acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove drew attention to the fact that charges were filed against Adams only and soon after he criticized the Biden administration’s lax immigration enforcement policies last year.
“It cannot be ignored that Mayor Adams criticized the prior Administration’s immigration policies before the charges were filed,” he wrote.
Adams has and continues to maintain his innocence:
I want to be crystal clear with New Yorkers: I never offered — nor did anyone offer on my behalf — any trade of my authority as your mayor for an end to my case. Never.

I am solely beholden to the 8.3 million New Yorkers that I represent and I will always put this city first.
Now, we must put this difficult episode behind us so that trust can be restored, New York can move forward, and we can continue delivering for the people of this city.

Bove also claimed that the entire corruption case was distracting Adams from his duties, which included — according to Bove — cracking down on illegal migration.
“The pending prosecution has unduly restricted Mayor Adams’ ability to devote full attention and resources to the illegal immigration and violent crime that escalated under the policies of the prior Administration,” he explained.
“We are particularly concerned about the impact of the prosecution on Mayor Adams’ ability to support critical, ongoing federal efforts ‘to protect the American people from the disastrous effects of unlawful mass migration and resettlement,’ as described in Executive Order 14165,” he added.
Despite Sassoon’s resignation, Adams remains on track to be free of his criminal case, courtesy of Bove directly intervening on Friday and personally asking a judge to dismiss the whole case.
