They say turnabout is fair play, and that axiom is likely what is driving House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and other GOP leaders to prepare for a series of investigations into the Biden administration and Democrats should they win control of the chamber next year.

After Democrats took over in 2018, party leaders have obsessed over then-President Donald Trump and his allies in Congress, impeaching the 45th president an unprecedented two times in two years. Even now, the Select Committee on Jan. 6, which came into being at the behest of Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) who also handpicked the members — all of them anti-Trump partisans — continues to focus on the ex-president and his closest allies.

But if the GOP takes the House in the 2022 midterms, all of that will change: McCarthy & Co. are planning to hit the ground running with a series of investigations into the Biden administration, generally, and some House Democrats in particular, according to reports.

The House GOP leader “is not only preparing to turn the tables on the majority in the 2022 midterm elections, but he is also beefing up efforts for subsequent retribution for Democrats hunting down the Trump administration officials in investigations,” Newsmax reported on Sunday.

Axios added that McCarthy is reportedly prepping so-called “preservation notices” for the Biden administration’s Cabinet members, instructing them to save communications and documents for potential oversight in the future by Congress.

Some topics of GOP interest include President Biden’s chaotic, deadly mishandling of the Afghanistan withdrawal; his reversal of Trump’s border security policies that the GOP believes are responsible for the current — and ongoing — migrant crisis; his handling of the still-lingering COVID-19 pandemic; his government’s leak of IRS data on several of the country’s billionaires; the National Security Agency’s reportedly spying on Fox News host Tucker Carlson; and Attorney General Merrick Garland’s memo directing U.S. attorneys and the FBI to investigate parental actions at local school board meetings.

As an aside to the Afghan probe, Republicans are said to be interested in learning why the White House abandoned hundreds of Americans and their Afghan allies after Biden said in August ahead of the pullout that no American or U.S. ally would be left behind.

“The investigations will not be able to be carried out in a Democrat-led Congress, but in the event Republicans take over, McCarthy’s preservation notices to the Biden administration might prove fruitful to spur probes of Democrats like they have conducted of the Trump administration, including the Mueller Report, Ukraine, COVID-19, and Jan. 6,” Newsmax added.

To that end, McCarthy is also reportedly set to plus-up staff in anticipation of the new probes.

One other area of interest for Republicans is Dr. Anthony Fauci, Biden’s chief medical adviser and head of the National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases; several, led by Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky, have accused him of approving funding for dangerous “gain of function” research in China, perhaps at the same lab the COVID-19 virus is believed to have come from.

“McCarthy plans to beef up staff, counsel and other resources to be ready to extract information beginning Day 1 if the GOP gets the gavel,” Axios’ Mike Allen noted.
