‘I’m supposed to be dead’: Trump tells what happened in his own words, explains problem with his shoes

Former President Donald J. Trump is a man who’s lucky to be alive after an assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally on Saturday. He recalled the harrowing moment when a bullet grazed him in an interview.

“I’m supposed to be dead,” Trump told the New York Post in an interview onboard his private plane on Sunday. “I’m supposed to be dead.”

The presumptive GOP nominee was en route to Milwaukee, WI where he will formally become the party’s nominee this week, a miracle considering how close he came to having his head blown off.

“The doctor at the hospital said he never saw anything like this, he called it a miracle,” said Trump who according to the outlet was sporting a loose, large white bandage that covered his right ear where he was struck. His aides would not allow pictures to be taken of him wearing the bandage.

“I’m not supposed to be here, I’m supposed to be dead,” he said. “I’m supposed to be dead.”

The former president said that he would have been killed had he not slightly turned his head to the right to read a chart with information about illegal aliens, with the bullet tearing off a piece of his right ear and bloodying his face as seen in the already iconic image of Trump defiantly raising his fist in the air.

He recalled how the Secret Service agents flew to him like “linebackers” after he was struck by the bullet, rushing him off the stage even as he wanted to stay and continue his speech, being told by agents “it wasn’t safe and they had to get him to a hospital.”

Trump unbuttoned his shirt sleeve and displayed “a large bruise on his right forearm,” according to the outlet which interviewed him on the way to Milwaukee, WI, the site of the Republican National Convention.

“The agents hit me so hard that my shoes fell off, and my shoes are tight,” he said concerning his remarks of wanting to get his shoes as he was being led away by agents.

Trump also praised Secret Service agents for taking out the shooter who was set up on a rooftop around 130 yards from the stage in Butler, PA where Trump was speaking to supporters at a rally.

“They took him out with one shot right between the eyes,” he said, pointing to the bridge of his nose, the Post reported.

“They did a fantastic job,” Trump added. “It’s surreal for all of us.”

Trump also spoke of the picture, one that is already one of the most powerful images of the 21st Century.

“A lot of people say it’s the most iconic photo they’ve ever seen,” Trump told the outlet. “They’re right and I didn’t die. Usually, you have to die to have an iconic picture.”

“I just wanted to keep speaking, but I just got shot,” he said.
