House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) is optimistic that his party will do well in the midterms while at the same time peddling a paranoid conspiracy theory about President Donald J. Trump and the GOP.
With voters set to go to the polls a week from tomorrow, the man who will almost certainly wield the speaker’s gavel if the Democrats retake the House warned that Republicans could be cooking up a “diabolical scheme” to thwart the results if Election Day doesn’t go their way.
CNN’s Manu Raju caught up with the trash-talking New Yorker, who is on the cusp of making history as the first black Speaker of the House, while he was on the campaign trail in California, with the interview airing on Sunday’s edition of “Inside Politics” on the Trump-hating cable TV network.
At one point during the segment, Jeffries was asked if there was “something” that troubles him about an election that polls and pundits are predicting will be a very good day for the Democrats.
Jeffries’ newest conspiracy: Republicans have a DIABOLICAL scheme to stop a free election.
“You have to assume… that Republicans are going to try to come up with any diabolical scheme to prevent November 3rd from being a free and fair election.”
He’s the real threat to a free election.

“Give me the percentage of chance of Democrats being in the majority,” the CNN reporter asked. “Is it, would you say, 100 percent at this point?”
“Well listen, we’re on the verge of taking back control of the House of Representatives,” the minority leader responded. “I don’t want to attach any particular percentage point other than making it clear it’s very likely we’re going to get this done.”
“There must be something in the back of your mind that it says that something could still go wrong on election night; would you acknowledge that”? Raju then inquired.
“Well, you have to assume, as we’ve done from the very beginning, that Republicans are gonna try to come up with any diabolical scheme to prevent November 3 from being a free and fair election,” Jeffries responded.
“What do you mean by that?” Raju shot back.
“Well, we’ve been planning from the very beginning to push back against all of the voter suppression efforts that they’ve tried to jam down the throats of the American people,” Jeffries answered. “Now up until this point, we’ve successfully stopped their scheming.”
Raju then asked, “But are you saying that’s the only way they can hold on to power?”
“I’ve said that from the very beginning,” responded Jeffries.
It was a suggestion that is guaranteed to feed into the paranoid fantasies of the Democrats’ deranged base, who will inevitably be deployed into the streets if the GOP and the Trump administration challenge anything that looks peculiar with the results.
Jeffries and his fellow Democrats are planning to run wild with investigations, and he has already pledged to go after Trump if the party retakes the House, recently likening him to an “organized crime boss.”
