Legal expert Alan Dershowitz predicts NYC jury will ‘probably’ convict Trump even if he’s innocent

Legal expert Alan Dershowitz has predicted that former President Donald Trump will ultimately be convicted by a Manhattan jury, even if he’s innocent.

He made the depressing prediction during a discussion Wednesday on Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk’s podcast.

At one point during the discussion, Kirk asked Dershowitz, who’s a practicing attorney, about the prospects of him joining Trump’s legal team.

Listen:

“I don’t know if you’ve been asked this, [but] if you were personally called by President Trump to join his legal team, is that even something you’d entertain? Because you did that in the impeachment. I think you could. I think you could get this case dismissed very quickly. Is that something you’d be open to?” he said.

Dershowitz replied in the negative.

“Well, I have a policy of only representing somebody once, and so I’m not his lawyer, but I would certainly be happy to participate in the court of public opinion,” he said.

He added that even if he were Trump’s lawyer, getting the case dismissed wouldn’t be so easy given the venue: left-wing Manhattan.

“I don’t think I could get this case dismissed so easily. I don’t think that if you had the best lawyers in the history of the world, Abraham Lincoln and John Marshall, a New York City judge would dismiss this case,” he said.

Why? Because “that New York City judge’s life would [then] be over.”

“Everybody would point to him the way they pointed to me when I defended Trump. ‘Oh, my God, there’s the man who helped Trump get free.’ So I don’t think it’s going to be easy,” Dershowitz explained.

Continuing his remarks, he then predicted that Trump will ultimately be convicted given the far-left venue.

“I think he probably will be convicted by a New York jury who voted for Bragg and voted for ‘get Trump,'” he said.

Ouch.

He’s not the only one who’s warned of the risks Trump faces being charged in such a left-wing venue:

But, Dershowitz continued, Trump’s conviction will most likely eventually be overturned.

“It will be reversed on appeal. It will never be affirmed all the way up to the Supreme Court. But Bragg’s going to be popular. He’ll be reelected and he’ll probably win this case unless there is a change of venue,” he said.

In response, Kirk praised him for his “cynical but honest” take and then asked whether Trump might be better off just pleading guilty.

“No, he should fight it. You can’t get fair justice in Manhattan. I could not win a case in Manhattan for Donald Trump, and I’m a pretty darn good lawyer,” Dershowitz replied.

What he said somewhat contradicted what he’d said days earlier to Newsmax host Greta Van Susteren. Speaking with her last Thursday, he described the case as being too weak to prosecute.

“When you’re going after the man who is running for president of the United States against the incumbent president, you better have a strong case, and this is about the weakest case I’ve seen in 60 years of law practice,” he said.

So it’s too weak to prosecute, and yet he believes Trump will be convicted?

Meanwhile, Dershowitz dropped a column for the Daily Mail on Wednesday in which he argued that Trump’s best bet is to request a change of venue, not that such a request would be granted.

“The anti-Trump passions in New York City are incredible. I’ve experienced them myself. … That is why Trump’s lawyers will undoubtedly appeal to the judge for a change of venue, which Bragg will strenuously oppose. The last thing he wants is a fair trial. He wants a trial that will allow him to realize his campaign promise,” he wrote.

“This case should be moved to one of the New York City boroughs, such as Staten Island, or to another part of New York state. But the judge, also an elected Democrat, is unlikely to grant that request,” he wrote.

Dershowitz concluded his column by warning of the dire consequences for the nation if Trump is indeed convicted and his conviction is ultimately upheld — something that could potentially happen.

“Whatever the outcome of this Bragg prosecution, Trump should eventually prevail. An appeals court should never uphold such an obvious misapplication of the law. But I don’t know if the American legal system can come back from this as easily. This is a perversion of justice. And if Trump is convicted, it will be a travesty of justice,”  he wrote

“Americans everywhere now have cause for concern, because today it is Trump – but tomorrow it could be you,” he added.
