The always outspoken Joan Rivers would have been driven “crazy” by today’s woke culture were she still with us, daughter Melissa Rivers says.
“If we would be looking at the news together, I know she would turn to me … and say, ‘Can you believe this sh*t?'” Rivers told the New York Post.
People should be putting their energy to better use, the 54-year-old host of the “Group Text” podcast lamented.
“We’ve become absolutely ridiculous as a society,” she said. “If everybody took all this collective angst and energy and put it towards a good cause, it would make such a huge difference.”
Political correctness was never a concern of the late comedian, who hilariously shamed Hollywood celebs for their hideous fashion sense on E!’s “Fashion Police.”
Up until her death in 2014, Joan Rivers was shocking the press with statements no other comedian would dare to say out loud.
In a March 2013 episode of “Fashion Police,” Joan got herself into trouble with the Anti-Defamation League when she pointed to the dress “Project Runway” host, supermodel Heidi Klum, wore to the Academy Awards and said, “The last time a German looked this hot was when they were pushing Jews into the ovens.”
Unlike today, when such a comment would have most comedians on their knees begging for forgiveness, Joan refused to apologize, CNN reported.
“It’s a joke, No. 1. No. 2 it is about the Holocaust,” the Jewish comedian told HLN’s “Showbiz Tonight.”
“This is the way I remind people about the Holocaust,” she stated at the time. “I do it through humor.”
Just months before her death, Rivers made what is perhaps her most provocative statement to a group of reporters following a same-sex wedding that she officiated.
When asked if America would ever see a gay or female president, she shot back, “We already have it with [former President Barack] Obama, so let’s just calm down.”
“You know Michelle [Obama] is a trans,” she stated without her characteristic sense of humor.
“A transgender,” she told the shocked reporter. “We all know it.”
“Oh my gosh!” the journalist exclaimed.
“Oh gosh,” she repeated blandly. “It’s okay.”
Again, Rivers declined to apologize, instead calling her comments a “compliment.”
“I think it’s a compliment,” she insisted in a statement released to CNN. “She’s so attractive, tall, with a beautiful body, great face, does great makeup.”
“Take a look and go back to La Cage Au Follies (sic). The most gorgeous women are transgender,” she argued. “Stop it already … and if you want to talk about ‘politically correct,’ I think this is a ‘politically incorrect’ attack on me because I’m old, Jewish, a woman and a ‘hetty’ – a heterosexual… and I plan to sue the reporter who, when he turned off his camera, tried to touch me inappropriately on the a** — luckily he hit my ankle.”
It was a response that would have left Dave Chappelle’s jaw on the ground, and it’s why the dynamic diva is so sorely missed today.
As Melissa Rivers prepares for the upcoming holidays, memories of her mother’s inclusive outlook on life fill her heart.
“We celebrate everything. Obviously, my family is Jewish, but we really celebrated the idea of the holidays,” Rivers told The Post. “And it started at Thanksgiving about family and friends and rolled all the way through to New Year’s.”
Everyone was welcomed at her mother’s famous New York City Thanksgiving table, Rivers recalled.
“All the way through the length of her apartment from the foyer halfway to the living room,” she said of the dining table. “She had this thing … there was never a kids’ table and an adult table.”
And the food was definitely not the focus of the gatherings of family and friends.
“Because no one in our family could cook,” Rivers explained with a laugh. “We don’t have any special food … the special foods were whatever the caterer left.”
