Mexico’s ‘Batman’ vigilante hunted for DIY crime crackdown, chasing down thieves, taping them to lampposts

Mexican police are looking for a vigilante who is being compared to “Batman” for how he deals with suspected thieves.

According to The Sun, a handful of men “have been found bound to street poles with their mouths taped and the word ‘thief’ scribbled across their faces in the past two weeks.” This has coincided with a sharp rise in the number of motorbike thefts in Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco.

In addition to the word “ratero,” which means thief, being written on the men, cat whiskers and moustaches have also been drawn in what some people believe is a calling card of sorts.

“The vigilante also left large pink signs above the men detailing what they’re alleged to have done,” the outlet wrote. “The supposed stolen bikes were also left nearby to illustrate the men’s alleged crimes.”

But according to police, the men are being treated as victims in their cases as the search for the mysterious vigilante continues.

The first person to be discovered was on June 13, when a young man was found tied to a post, left with a cardboard sign accusing him of being a thief.

In the following days, more men were found taped up, seemingly by the same perpetrator, who left all the alleged thieves in similar states.

State Security Secretary Juan Pablo Hernández said a total of five cases have been reported, with cops hot on the Mexican’s trail.

He added that though no suspects have yet been arrested, police have identified two vehicles that they think are connected to the attacks.
