Michael Matteo: New internet task force formed to regulate free speech

Op-ed views and opinions expressed are solely those of the author.

With all of the furor about false reports about the abortion issue and hearsay testimony that a senior citizen president (Trump) pummeled Secret Service agents on January 6th in an amazing display of backstreet driving, one story that has been lost has been the Biden administration’s attempt to resurrect the speech police, formerly known as the Disinformation Governance Board.

In a memo released in mid-June, the White House proposed a task force headed by Vice President Kamala Harris to stomp out what they labeled as “gendered disinformation.” Gone is bad Mary Poppins impersonator, Nina Jankowicz, but the cast of woke members on this task force would rival even the most woke Disney characters in one of their animated movies   This task force will include Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, Attorney General Merrick Garland and Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and many others whose political agendas are slightly to the left of Karl Marx.

According to VP Harris, the goals of the panel will be “developing programs and policies” to protect “political figures” and journalists from “disinformation,” “abuse” and “harassment.”  In other words, with an election looming, they will classify and seek to censor anyone whose views don’t comply with their ideas as “disinformation,” “abuse,” or “harassment.”  Anyone who has ever been “fact” checked or suspended on liberal social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter or YouTube or put in places like Facebook Jail for posting comments that didn’t agree with a “fact” checker’s political agenda now has to worry about the federal government instituting policies that will allow more speech police persons to silence them on the grounds that what they write will be classified as “disinformation” by a bunch of bureaucrats who don’t know the difference between disinformation and satire, so Babylon Bee, beware!

The memo also stated that this will be an “interagency effort to address online harassment and abuse, specifically focused on technology-facilitated gender-based violence, and to develop concrete recommendations to improve prevention, response, and protection efforts through programs and policies in the United States and globally.”

It will also include the Director of the White House Gender Policy Council (before reading the memo, I didn’t even know we had this office) and the Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs.  Other members of the task force will include just about every cabinet officer because, in their view, the policing of what people write or say on the internet is of such vital importance to national “insecurity.”

Perhaps in addition to paying the debts of gender studies majors who will spend 5-6 years in college and graduate, yet still not be able to determine which bathroom to use, they will create the Office of Homeland Insecurity, which will be for all those who need safe rooms when they hear a tweet that causes them emotional breakdowns. I hear that Nina Jankowicz is still looking for a job.

The memo stated that “The Task Force shall work across executive departments, agencies, and offices to assess and address online harassment and abuse that constitute technology-facilitated gender-based violence…” What will their definition of “violence” be?  Many liberals have stated that silence is violence, does this mean that people will be punished for being silent.

DISCLAIMER: For anyone who voted for Biden or who believes he is doing a good job, the previous comment is sarcasm and not to be taken literally.

This will undoubtedly be a task force composed to silence conservatives and anyone believing it will be unbiased would probably believe that Nancy Pelosi will open up a daycare center for the children of Republicans because she is worried about giving them elbow room. One needs only to look at the January 6th hearings to see a committee that isn’t interested in the truth, hearing both sides of a story, or providing witnesses that would cast doubt on their political agenda whose purpose is to vilify Donald Trump.

Biden has ordered this panel to submit a blueprint that “outlin[es] a whole-of-government approach to preventing and addressing technology-facilitated gender-based violence, including concrete actions that executive departments, agencies, and offices have committed to take to implement the Task Force’s recommendations.”

Vice President Harris, in her speech announcing the task force, made the claim that “the internet is a place of fear.” She went on to claim that she sees her job to be a champion of those who suffer every time they turn on their computers and are subject to harassment. She evoked images of the individual who shot 10 people in Buffalo, and cast blame on the internet for the Uvalde massacre, which illustrates the twisted liberal mindset of blaming everyone but the person who commits heinous acts and falling back on the idea that “the internet made me do it.”

She went on to connect the Supreme Court’s decision to make abortion a state’s right issue with internet harassment by creating the following situation, “Now, just think about this: In states where abortion is criminalized, an abuser could purchase a woman’s location history through a data broker. This is a realistic scenario. If that history shows that she sought an abortion out of state, he could then turn it over to law enforcement in a jurisdiction that has deemed that a crime. This is a horrifying possibility for that woman.”

This is an extreme exercise in creative victimization to push an agenda that encompasses one simple issue: Liberals want to make the argument that they are creating laws to protect people, but the harsh reality is that it just gives them more control over people’s lives, which is their end game.

Yes, people do harass and irritate people online, and there are legal remedies (civil and criminal) for harassment that are already in place. For annoying internet trolls who make lude comments, the solution is as simple as blocking them or in a Facebook scenario, unfriending them. To make the case that there needs to be the creation of a federal task force that will use subjective measures to unleash the forces of the government to suppress speech under the guise of “protecting people” is a tactic out of the fascist playbook, and should be resisted by people who believe that an individual has the right of free speech, even hateful speech because at its worst it only exposes the ignorance of the speaker. If this board gets its way, I’m sure they’d censor what I’ve written here because it is contrary to their agenda.
