President Donald Trump said he was “just kidding” about thinking of renaming the Gulf of America after himself.
The president was speaking by phone on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures,” when he revealed the thought he had entertained when he moved to rename the “Gulf of Mexico” as the “Gulf of America” in an executive action when he returned to the White House last January.
Speaking about the war with Iran amid the most recent failed peace negotiations, host Maria Bartiromo asked the president about supertankers reportedly headed to the Gulf of America to buy oil and gas from the United States.
“What can you tell me about that?” Bartiromo asked.

“Well, I can tell you it used to be called the Gulf of Mexico, that’s what I can tell you,” Trump replied.
“Now, it’s called the Gulf of America, because of me. One of my little things that I did,” he said, adding that it is a “great honor.”
“I used to say, ‘ Why is it the Gulf of Mexico when we have 93% of the frontage?” he continued, speaking of the shoreline.
“It’s now the Gulf of America, which I’m very honored by. I must tell you, I was thinking about calling it the ‘Gulf of Trump’ and I decided not to do it,” he continued, getting a chuckle out of Bartiromo.
“It was going to be called the Gulf of Trump, and then I said, ‘You know, that’s not going to play too well,'” he added. “I think maybe that one wouldn’t have worked out…You know, that’s not going to play too well.”
“You know I’m kidding,” Trump then told Bartiromo, who laughed, telling him he was “being facetious.”
“The Fake News will have a headline tomorrow,” Trump predicted.
In a post on Truth Social over the weekend, the president said, “Massive numbers of completely empty oil tankers, some of the largest anywhere in the World, are heading, right now, to the United States to load up with the best and ‘sweetest’ oil ([and] gas!) anywhere in the World.”
“We have more oil than the next two largest oil economies combined – and higher quality. We are waiting for you. Quick turnaround!” he added.
While speaking at a Saudi investor forum in Miami last month, the president quipped about renaming the Strait of Hormuz, the crucial waterway that Iran has been using for leverage.
“They have to open up the Strait of Trump — I mean Hormuz,” he joked.
“Excuse me, I’m so sorry. Such a terrible mistake. The Fake News will say, ‘He accidentally said.’ No, there’s no accidents with me, not too many.”
