Charlotte cancels school so teachers can PROTEST on May 1st

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education has agreed to cancel classes so teachers can attend a protest.

Educators will be taking to the streets on May 1 to march for more funding, and the day will be marked down on the calendar as an optional workday. Those who opt to attend the protest, put together by the North Carolina Association of Educators, will gather in the capital of Raleigh, North Carolina.

“The CMS board called an emergency meeting Friday after over 1,875 of the district’s around 9,000 total educators had requested leave by Wednesday evening, according to public records. On May 1 last year, for comparison, there were 1,210 teacher absences. A total of 2,622 teachers had requested leave by 6 a.m. Friday,” The Charlotte Observer reported on Friday.

CMS Board Chair Stephanie Sneed spoke about the decision to take the day off in hopes of securing more funding for public education in the state.

“Trust that we don’t make this decision lightly. This is a greater issue that we have been dealing with for quite some time when it comes to funding for our schools … We need the support from our state in order to do what’s best for children,” she said.
