NYC to pay big bucks for a ‘somewhat bloodthirsty’ Rat Czar with a ‘general aura of badassery’

Crime isn’t the only thing plaguing New York City these days as rats are now invading places they hadn’t visited pre-pandemic, creating the need for a Rat Czar to handle the problem who has a “swashbuckling attitude, crafty humor, and general aura of badassery.”

It probably helps if you really like killing rats as well. The job pays big bucks with a salary of up to $170,000 a year, according to the Daily Mail.

The city is desperate for someone… anyone to come in and eradicate the rat problem. They not only swarm garbage, but they also drag food into the subways (remember pizza rat?), get into cars, and invade outdoor dining. The vermin are a health hazard and an eyesore.

Mayor Eric Adams’ administration posted a job listing this week seeking someone to lead the charge in the city’s long-running war against rats. The official job title is “director of rodent mitigation,” but everyone is calling it the Rat Czar.

Qualifications include a background in urban planning, project management, or government work. They also need to be proficient in PowerPoint.

“There’s NOTHING I hate more than rats. If you have the drive, determination, and killer instinct needed to fight New York City’s relentless rat population – then your dream job awaits,” Adams offered.

The job is described as doing “the impossible” in the fight against the rats. The applicant will also need “stamina and stagecraft” and the description notes that “the ideal candidate is highly motivated and somewhat bloodthirsty, determined to look at all solutions from various angles, including improving operational efficiency, data collection, technology innovation, trash management, and wholesale slaughter.”

According to a city council member who spoke with CBS News, the city has seen a 71 percent increase in rat sightings since 2020.

Adams is stone-cold serious about the problem. He held a press conference in October asserting that “fighting rats” was on a par with crime and inequality.

“Despite their successful public engagement strategy and cheeky social media presence, rats are not our friends. Rodents spread disease, damage homes and wiring, and even attempt to control the movements of kitchen staffers in an effort to take over human jobs,” the posting contends.

The mayor is looking for a top rat bureaucrat to become the public face of the city’s eradication and education efforts.

“Cunning, voracious, and prolific, New York City’s rats are legendary for their survival skills, but they don’t run this city – we do,” the posting declares.

Applicants should have a crafty sense of humor and expect “to lead from the front, using hands-on techniques to exterminate rodents with authority and efficiency.”

The rat czar posting claims, “Rats will hate this job posting. But 8.8 million New Yorkers and your city government stand ready to work with you to reduce the rat population, increase cleanliness, and prevent pestilence.”

Ironically, New York City residency within 90 days of taking the job is required.
