Oxford debating society president is challenging vote to oust him over Charlie Kirk remarks

The incoming president of the Oxford debating society is challenging a vote to oust him following alleged remarks he made celebrating Charlie Kirk’s assassination.

President-elect George Abaraonye lost a no-confidence vote after more than two-thirds of the Oxford Union debating society called for him to resign. He met with Kirk and debated toxic masculinity earlier this year, in May.

“More than the required two-thirds of voters, many of whom were alumni voting by proxy, supported the no-confidence measure against President-elect George Abaraonye,” the Associated Press reported. “Abaraonye, who is in his final year at University College, has challenged the result for procedural failures.”

According to the Telegraph, Abaraonye allegedly posted on Instagram after the murder of the Turning Point USA co-founder, saying, “Charlie Kirk got shot loool.”

The Oxford Union said in a statement last month that it “unequivocally condemn[ed] the reported words and sentiments” expressed by Abaraonye, who was elected in June. “His reported views do not represent the Oxford Union’s current leadership or committee’s view.”

The president-elect removed his posted remarks and expressed his regrets, saying he had “reacted impulsively,” according to the Times.

“I may have disagreed strongly with Mr Kirk’s politics, but in death we all deserve respect, and I extend my condolences to his family and loved ones.”

Mikey McCoy, Kirk’s former chief of staff, condemned the union where “presidents of the union publicly celebrate the assassination of a political opponent.”

In a letter read on air, McCoy warned that if Abaraonye remained in office, Kirk’s supporters would “personally contact every American political speaker who has ever graced the union’s chamber and urge them never again to lend their name, time, or reputation to that institution that has betrayed its founding ideals.”

Abaraonye reportedly “submitted the motion of no confidence in himself, with voting taking place over the weekend,” according to the BBC.

The Oxford Union posted the results of the no-confidence vote on Tuesday.

“Mr Abaraonye is disputing the vote, telling the BBC people campaigning to oust him had ‘unsupervised access’ to the email account collecting proxy ballots,” BBC reported. “Later on Tuesday, another vote of no confidence was brought, this time against the current president.”

In a statement, Abaraonye claimed the “extremely serious issues” had been “referred to the disciplinary committee on Monday afternoon and that Mr Abaraonye remained president-elect,” according to the BBC.

“George is proud and thankful to have the support of well in excess of a majority of students at Oxford, who voted to have a safe election and resist attempts to subvert democracy,” his statement read.
