Palin re-ups advice for DeSantis to step aside, throws in naked pitch to be Trump’s running mate

Former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin is dropping not-so-subtle hints that she is open to being former President Trump’s running mate in the 2024 presidential election, alluding to the fact that he should pick someone who has “nothing to lose” and can focus on the job.

“Trump needs to choose somebody who, like him, has nothing to lose. What more can they do to that person personally or verbal attacks or anything else on family?” she told NewsMax host Eric Bolling. “That person has been through the wringer, so they know what they’re getting into. And that person then can just focus on doing what’s right for the people.”

“Are you describing yourself?” Bolling asked.

“Not necessarily,” Palin laughed. “However, I’ll tell you, the opportunity that I had to run with someone who wasn’t as commonsense [of a] constitutional conservative as I, and I think the majority of Republicans were, but still having the opportunity to form a team like that in running, in offering ourselves up in service to America—oh my goodness, no greater honor, no greater opportunity.”

Palin saw massive support when she ran with Arizona Senator John McCain in the 2008 presidential election. She was arguably far more electable than he was and had a huge following at the time. The duo was eventually defeated by former President Obama. Following that loss, Palin resigned as governor of Alaska before her term was up.

Palin was defeated twice in 2022. She lost to Democratic Rep. Mary Peltola in a special election to represent Alaska’s at-large congressional district and then lost in the 2022 midterm elections as she ran for a full term to hold the seat.

The former governor is a staunch advocate for Trump and has not waivered in her support of him.

Palin has been very vocal that she believes that Trump’s biggest rival, Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida, should sit this presidential election cycle out, even though he has not even declared he is running. She thinks he will be president one day but she also believes that Trump should be the nominee this time around.

“DeSantis doesn’t need to [run]. I envision him as our president someday but not right now,” Palin told Bolling. “He should stay governor for a bit longer. He’s young, you know. He has decades ahead of him where he can be our president.”

“When you talk about the specific people, the individual people who are looking at putting their hat in the ring… they got a lot of guts thinking they’re gonna go up against Trump,” she asserted.

Trump has not selected a running mate yet but it is rumored that he will select a woman for the position. Palin is not the only one being considered evidently.

According to former Trump White House strategist Stephen Bannon, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) is also on the shortlist.

He told NBC News, “This is no shrinking violet, she’s ambitious — she’s not shy about that, nor should she be. … She sees herself on the shortlist for Trump’s VP.”

When Greene “looks in the mirror, she sees a potential president smiling back,” Bannon noted.

CNN is reporting that Trump may consider New York GOP Rep. Elise Stefanik.

“While talk about a 2024 vice-presidential pick is of course premature, conversations about adding Stefanik to a future Trump ticket have gained steam in recent weeks at Mar-a-Lago and in other Republican circles, sources said. Current and former advisers and others in Trump’s orbit have privately argued that the New York Republican, who replaced Rep. Liz Cheney as the no. 3 House Republican last year, is a fierce and loyal attack dog, and Trump would benefit from tapping a woman for vice president should he run again,” the news outlet speculated.

“Two people familiar with the matter said Trump has been surveying close friends and allies on what they think of Stefanik, one of several Republican women he is possibly eyeing for the potential VP slot, though he has not ruled out a few male contenders, too. One of these people said the former President believes Stefanik has undergone a genuine transformation – leaving the moderate wing of the party to join its increasingly powerful ‘America First’ flank,” CNN reported.
