Plane explodes into massive fireball on take-off, footage is heart-stopping

At least seven people are dead after a UPS plane exploded before takeoff in Louisville, Kentucky.

The tragic event occurred at 5:15 pm as it attempted to depart from the Muhammad Ali International Airport en route to Hawaii, the FAA confirmed. The explosion and the shocking moments leading up to it were captured on video and shared on social media on Tuesday.

The aircraft veered off the runway and struck local businesses Kentucky Petroleum Recycling and Grade A Autoparts. All of the employees were eventually accounted for, according to the state’s Governor Andy Beshear.

Reuters report claims at least seven people are dead, “including all three onboard.”

“Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg told reporters at a late-night news briefing that four deaths were confirmed on the ground, with 11 injured people taken to hospitals,” the article reads. “Separately, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said the death toll was at least seven and expected to rise. Some survivors had suffered ‘very significant’ injuries, he said.”

The airport is home to the UPS Worldport, “a global hub for the shipping company’s air cargo operations and its largest package-handling facility worldwide.” It is expected to resume normal operation on Wednesday morning. The company warned all customers expecting packages that this event may affect delivery times.

“Contingency plans are in place to help ensure that shipments arrive at their final destinations as quickly as conditions permit,” they said.

The craft was fully fueled at the time of the explosion, which amounted to about 38,000 gallons, as it prepared for its 8-1/2 flight over the water. This marks the first UPS plane crash since 2013, Reuters reports. At that time, “an Airbus aircraft went down on a landing approach to the international airport in Birmingham, Alabama, killing both crew.”
