Politico lists Dem governors who could be ‘well positioned’ to run if Biden ‘bows out’ of presidential race

Amid a flurry of “senior moments,” skyrocketing inflation, and dismal approval numbers, Politico has thoughtfully provided a list of Democratic governors who could run in 2024 “if Biden doesn’t,” despite that President Biden “has made clear he plans to run again.”

“Let it be said: President Joe Biden has made clear he plans to run again,” Politico reported on Thursday. “But the 2024 parlor game has intensified anyway, as Democrats privately raise concerns about his age (soon to be 80), his poll numbers (hovering around half that) and the prospect of a midterm rout in November.”

“If Biden bows out,” Politico stated, “Democratic governors could be well-positioned to step in, seizing on the advantages of state leadership: established brands apart from a damaged national party; state-level policy success like tackling stricter gun laws or protecting access to abortion; and a degree of separation from the drubbing their national counterparts are likely to suffer in November.”

Topping Politico’s list of potential candidates are Democratic Governors J.B. Pritzker of Illinois, Phil Murphy of New Jersey, and California’s super slick progressive Gavin Newsom.

“Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker trekked to New Hampshire last weekend to rally Democrats for abortion rights,” the news outlet noted. “New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy’s allies launched a federal super PAC and a nonprofit, which have aired $2 million in TV ads about Murphy’s inflation-fighting efforts.”

“And California Gov. Gavin Newsom has appointed himself the Democratic pugilist-in-chief, calling his party too timid and joining Donald Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social, to challenge Republicans on their own turf,” Politico continued.

While it’s true that Newsom did join Truth Social to call out “Republican lies” and then went on Twitter to brag about how bold he is for doing so, as BizPac Review reported, users quickly put the man some have described as a “narcissist” in his place.

“I know we’re all on this platform in search for the truth,” Newsom claimed in his first Truth Social post. “But the truth is I’ve not been able to find a simple explanation for the fact that we have a red state murder problem.”

What followed were a flood of tweets highlighting Los Angeles’s soaring homicide rate.

“All of those states have lower homicide rates than LA County alone,” Greg Price shot back.

With Californian’s wilting under the highest gas prices in the nation, and as videos of soul-crushing homeless encampments continue to go viral, it is difficult to understand how Politico could, in good conscience, include Newsom on the list.

Then again, Politic0 also included Colorado Gov. Jared Polis because he’s openly gay and that “would be history-making” and said that should Stacey Abrams finally manage to oust Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp in November, she would be a contender because she is “already a party star with an enormous national fundraising base.”

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer of “I was almost kidnapped by white supremacists” fame also received a nod.

According to former President Barack Obama’s former advisor David Axelrod, it all comes down to name recognition.

“If Biden isn’t going to run, but he doesn’t make that decision until very late, as is his habit, there’s not a lot of time to introduce yourself to the country,” he said. “So that favors the candidates who have already run and it may favor candidates who already have resources, like Pritzker and Murphy.”

“I think there is at least some fair conjecture that [Biden’s age] will ultimately cause him not to run,” he said, “so it’s natural that politicians are thinking about the ‘what if.'”
