Clemson University has officially reached a settlement with a professor who had been fired over a post about Charlie Kirk.
Dr. Joshua Bregy had been working as an assistant professor in the Department of Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences when he was fired in September 2025 for reposting a heinous message about Charlie Kirk on social media.
“I’ll never advocate for violence in any form, but it sounds to me like karma is sometimes swift and ironic. As Kirk said, ‘play certain games, win certain prizes,'” the post read, adding that “no one should be gunned down” but also saying that Kirk was a “flawed human being whose rhetoric caused notable damage.”
In an agreement reached last week, Bregy agreed to abandon the lawsuit he had filed against the school in exchange for Clemson rescinding his termination. Bregy will officially resign from the school by May 15, 2026, and until that date, he will continue to occupy a non-teaching role where he will receive benefits and remain on payroll.
“The agreement allows Bregy to continue listing Clemson University as his institutional affiliation for any pending grants through his resignation date. It also provides that Clemson Provost Robert H. Jones will provide positive letters of recommendation to future employers,” Fox News reported.
“We were honored to represent Dr. Bregy and to reach an agreement that restores his employment, allows him to continue to pursue research funding, and deters the university from violating the First Amendment rights of its faculty in the future,” said ACLU of South Carolina Legal Director Allen Chaney. “Politicians and university administrators come and go, but years from now we will still be here. So will the U.S. Constitution.”

“By settling with Dr. Joshua Bregy, Clemson University has effectively condoned his appalling comments about Charlie Kirk’s murder. To not only keep him on the payroll through May 2026 but also promise him a positive letter of recommendation is a complete double-down on his ‘karma’ rhetoric. Why would any institution reward such behavior with taxpayer-funded benefits and professional praise if they truly disagreed with it? It’s a sad reflection of the state of higher education when a university’s response to the glorification of violence is a golden parachute,” wrote attorney Jason Rademacher.
to this settlement. Shame on Clemson University.

“It is unacceptable for college University’s to condone this kind of behavior where a Professor can make a public comment via social media condoning the murder of another human being because you don’t agree with him or her, which is exactly what Clemson University did by agreeing to this settlement. Shame on Clemson University,” he added.
