Raskin accuses GOP of banning books including Orwell’s ‘1984’ and ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ in unhinged House floor rant

U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin is an accomplished pro when it comes to grandstanding and on Thursday, the Maryland Democrat took his dishonest histrionics to an entirely new level in an unhinged rant on the floor of the House of Representatives where he accused Republicans of banning books, the latest brazen lie that has been foisted off on the public by gaslighting leftist politicians and their corrupt media toadies.

Raskin, a driving force of the now-defunct committee to investigate the so-called “insurrection” on January 6, 2021, as well as a veteran of the failed effort to impeach former President Donald J. Trump, put on a show during a hearing on a Republican measure to allow parents to have more oversight over public school curricula, a topic that has become a national flashpoint as left-wing racist ideology and perverted sexual filth being taught in classrooms and made available on the bookshelves of school libraries has sparked a major backlash as awareness has grown.

During his diatribe, the congressman conveniently omitted specific references to the actual material that has drawn scrutiny including books on virulently anti-white Critical Race Theory and bastardized retellings of American history to portray all white people as oppressors, as well as graphic homosexual and transgender content featuring detailed instructions on how to perform lewd sexual acts. Instead, Raskin uncorked a blatant falsehood that Republicans are determined to ban such iconic classics as George Orwell’s “1984,” a terrifying treatise on totalitarian government, and Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

Raskin also floated another one of his wild conspiracy theories by claiming that the GOP measure was merely an excuse for book banning, yet another bogus narrative from a party that no longer even bothers to pretend that it is telling the truth.

“It’s about book banning of course,” he said. “Two years ago more than 1,600 books were banned in the United States of America. Here are three of the key books that the right-wingers have been going after. Khaled Hosseini’s ‘The Kite Runner,’ about the dangerous fanaticism, authoritarianism, and abuse of the Taliban, a right-wing religious fundamentalist movement all about censorship and repressing women’s control over their own bodies and their own fertility.”

“‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, Margaret Atwood’s extraordinary dystopian novel about a right-wing, misogynist movement which uses high technology and depraved religious ideology to control not only the minds of their followers, but the private and public lives and the fertility of women,” he raved while waving a copy of the acclaimed 1985 novel which is the inspiration for the dystopian Hulu miniseries of the same name.

“And, of course, George Orwell’s ‘1984,’ because they have no sense of irony!” Raskin raved. “They’re always trying to censor this one.”

“We need more politicians reading books in America and fewer politicians trying to censor books in America. And I tell you, it is amazing to me,” he continued even after he was told that his time had expired by the committee chair.

Not to be outdone when it comes to flagrant fibs, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) falsely claimed that “MAGA Republicans” don’t want America’s children to learn about the Holocaust, a big lie worthy of Joseph Goebbels himself.

As for the banning of “1984” and “The Handmaid’s Tale,” Raskin did not offer any specific examples of where and when the books have been prohibited and which Republicans have called for them to be made unavailable to young readers.

Rep. Raskin’s reference to “1984” was delivered without a hint of irony in that one famous passage from Orwell’s book bears an eerie resemblance to modern-day America under the rule of his own authoritarian Democratic Party: “Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right.”
