Republican-led state takes a different approach to June ‘Pride Month’ celebrations

States and cities across the nation gear up to celebrate gay pride month in June, but some are offering alternatives that emphasize faith, family, and patriotism.

As Democrats like Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, who announced her sponsorship of an event celebrating “Trans Period Pride,” some red states offered a different take for the month of June. Arkansas Governor Sarah Sanders just declared June as “Fidelity Month” in a proclamation issued last week.

“The United States of America was founded on the values of faith, liberty, and patriotism as acknowledged in its founding documents and in the statements of its Founding Fathers,” the proclamation reads.

“Cultivating fidelity to God, family, community, and country contributes to human flourishing and supports a healthy, stable, well-ordered society,” it continues, noting that the commitment of the state of Arkansas “to spiritual and civic institutions” is at the “core” of its collective identity.

“Practices that encourage virtue, commitment, responsibility, and shared moral foundations strengthen both individuals and their communities,” the proclamation notes, adding that June “is promoted by community and faith leaders as a time to encourage renewed dedication to these virtues and institutions.”

The governor declared that Fidelity Month will give Arkansans an opportunity to “reflect on and renew commitments to these shared values and institutions.”

Arkansas joined the state of Utah in recognizing Fidelity Month.

And earlier in April, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee signed a resolution declaring June as “Nuclear Family Month.” The proclamation called the nuclear family the “basic building block of Tennessee’s society throughout her formative years,” and it has “built the United States of America and created prosperity within our nation.”

The latest proclamations come as many across the nation leap into June with the annual celebration of the LGBTQ+ community. The office of Boston’s mayor sparked an immediate outcry when it promoted a “Trans Period Pride” event at a public library. The free event reportedly would include a catered dinner and “free period underwear provided to all attendees.”

Reportedly, the event was canceled after the backlash.
