Starbucks Workers United claimed on Tuesday that the coffee drink giant is banning all Pride decorations in its stores across the nation during Pride Month and, in fact, started doing so two weeks ago.
Leftist media outlets such as The New Republic are outraged and are charging that Starbucks caved to far-right anti-LGBTQ fury.
The purported move comes after boycotts of Target and Bud Light over ad campaigns and merchandise that promote a transgender-friendly ideology. Other retail outlets are also feeling the heat as are performers such as Garth Brooks who is standing firm on serving Bud-Light in his new Nashville bar, calling those who don’t agree a**holes and telling them they can go somewhere else.
“BREAKING: In the middle of Pride Month, Starbucks BANS Pride decorations in stores across the United States,” the Starbucks workers’ union tweeted.
Breaking: Starbucks BANS pride decorations from all U.S. stores.
According to the union for Starbucks employees, Starbucks Workers United:

For the last two weeks, Starbucks workers have taken to social media to report that the company is no longer allowing Pride decorations in-store. This seems to be the first year the publicly “pro-LGBTQ+” company has taken this kind of stance.
— Starbucks Workers United (@SBWorkersUnited) June 13, 2023
So far, there is no word from Starbucks confirming the banning of Pride decorations in its stores. But the union is standing firm on its claim.
According to the Daily Beast, “Starbucks has instructed workers in at least twenty-one states to remove Pride flags and decorations from stores, in a move that has enraged workers, according to the union Starbucks Workers United (SBWU). Baristas at stores have reported being told to remove Pride paraphernalia, Casey Moore, a spokesperson for SBWU told The Daily Beast.”
In union stores, where Starbucks claims they are unable to make “unilateral changes” without bargaining, the company took down Pride decorations and flags anyway – ignoring their own anti-union talking point.

Taking a cue from Target, who bowed to anti-LGBTQ+ pressure and removed pride merchandise, corporate and district management are taking down the pride decorations that have become an annual tradition in stores.
— Starbucks Workers United (@SBWorkersUnited) June 13, 2023
The media outlet continued to report, “Workers in Oklahoma were told ‘it was a safety issue related to the recent attacks on Target,’ Moore said, while in Massachusetts, workers were told ‘they didn’t have any labor hours to decorate for Pride.’ Starbucks workers at a store in Madison, Wisconsin posted on Instagram yesterday that their district manager had torn down their Pride decorations because they weren’t ‘welcoming for everyone.’ Starbucks did not respond to a request for comment from The Daily Beast.”
If the move is true, it would be a shock as Starbucks has always adopted a pro-LGBTQ stance. This year, the chain partnered with artist Tim Singleton to design a series of special multi-colored Pride-themed tumblers. But according to the union, the company has decided that all Pride decorations must come down in all stores, even the unionized ones.
The union is claiming that this isn’t the first time that Starbucks has failed to stand up for the LGBTQ community. That includes its own employees.
If Starbucks was a true ally, they would stand up for us, especially during a time when LGBTQ+ people are under attack. A company that cares wouldn’t turn their back on the LGBTQ+ community to protect their already astronomically high profits.
— Starbucks Workers United (@SBWorkersUnited) June 13, 2023
True allyship with the LGBTQ+ community is negotiating a union contract that legally locks-in our benefits, our freedom of expression, and ways to hold management accountable.
— Starbucks Workers United (@SBWorkersUnited) June 13, 2023
Starbucks is powered by many queer workers, but management has failed to materially support the LGBTQ+ community. Last October, some workers have reported that their transgender benefit plan changed, causing them to pay out of pocket fees and lose access to certain providers.
— Starbucks Workers United (@SBWorkersUnited) June 13, 2023
The union is also leveling the charge that in October, some trans-Starbucks workers had their health benefit plan changed, forcing them to pay out of pocket for certain treatments. They also allegedly lost access to certain providers.
Right on cue, the meltdown from the left arrived:
I’m at a loss for words.
The vast majority of Americans support LGBTQ+ equality — I just heard from Republican family members who are so excited for Rhode Island #Pride.
Starbucks choosing an extremist, hateful minority over its LGBTQ+ staff, employees, and customers is wrong. https://t.co/jXYnflrB2z
— Nick Autiello (@NickAutiello) June 13, 2023
Reminder that @Starbucks threatened their trans employees with losing their healthcare if they unionized. They don’t actually care about LGBTQ people despite their work force overwhelmingly being LGBTQ.https://t.co/TWxCP00POC pic.twitter.com/XW6gZVlGjB

Literally the reason so many trans and non-binary folks work at Starbucks is because they have some of the best trans-inclusive insurance when it comes to nationally available jobs.
To do this in the current climate is MONSTROUS https://t.co/HIj49puTXK

This is absolutely the dumbest and worst thing @Starbucks could do https://t.co/fARGr8fGgF
— Molly Jong-fast (@MollyJongFast) June 13, 2023
starbucks is literally known for convincing lgbtq people they’re the only workplace that will be 100% safe for us and even they don’t want anything to do with pride anymore. this is pretty bad https://t.co/X9Wnudy6Zl

Starbucks is built on the backs of queer workers this is fucking abhorrent https://t.co/c8PH42gbb9

Wait sorry STARBUCKS?
STARBUCKS is choosing Republicans over gays? Oh that was stupid as fuck. https://t.co/FGmY7g1OIy
— Janelle Monae Stan Acct tbh (@csilverandgold) June 13, 2023
Absolute trash from @Starbucks. I wonder if the companies who eagerly proclaimed their “love is love” efforts in 2015 and since are putting out press releases that they’re caving to reactionary far-right extremists. @StarbucksNews? https://t.co/fDbtJ3ufJq

But others cheered it:
HUGE: Starbucks is taking down all Pride decorations in every store across the United States
People are sick of sexual ideology being forced down their throats, even at Starbucks
Just sell coffee!https://t.co/SbKe9cJFc1

Good.
Just sell us coffee. That’s all you need to do. Oh, and maybe a croissant.
— TheFOO (@PolitiBunny) June 13, 2023
starbucks should stick to ridiculously expensive coffee

Good. I’m there to get a drink, not activism.
— Enemy of the State (@StrawStephen) June 13, 2023
Good. This disgusting, homophobic, woman hating flag of liars and porn peddlers has no place in society.
— Concreteisland – No Self-ID (@Concreteisland2) June 13, 2023
People might feel comfortable going there for coffee again without feeling under political pressure the whole time.
— Rookery (@Rookerylaw) June 13, 2023
These companies are realizing that the Pride community is just a tiny percentage of their business. It isolates the majority of their customers. This is great to see, not that I go to Starbucks, but it’s a start.
— Bobbie Evans (@BobbieE20238239) June 13, 2023
I wonder if that had anything to do with the email that I sent to Starbucks corporate office the other day about the highly overbearing decorations at their Yardley location. pic.twitter.com/qV7go1Z00e
